Description

This is very basic commentry on the 3D and supporting software available. 1) Daz Studio 3 or Poser 8. Beginner should start with the free version of Daz Studio. I have got Poser 7 and used it only a handful of times. Whilst Poser is still easy to use it confirmed my prejudice that Daz Studio is a better program. To some extent it depends what you start with and quite happy to receive comments on why Poser is better (or otherwise). 2) For 2D the free GIMP is a good choice. I use it because it can use the Photoshop abr brush files. GIMP can do most things that more expensive programs can do. I use Paintshop Pro 7 and prefer this to the later versions. Photoshop is the industry standard although I can't understand why people would buy such an expensive program which is hardly better than much cheaper equivalents. You can try Photoshop for free. 3) For 2D program filters I use the Flaming Pear products, especially the flood program whereby you can get items to look like they are in water with good reflections. 4) I recommend the free fractal programs. Sterling is my favourite but Apophysis is also good and has 3D capability. You can use fractals for backgrounds and special effects. As detailed backgrounds can detract from the main character using fractals with heaving blurring is often better. 5) Bryce. Although I dont use Bryce directly I do use it for backgrounds. It can readily produce abstract backgrounds and good skies. Fairly fast speed and quite cheap. 6) Vue 8. Try one of the cheaper offerings first. You can get good functionality from one of the $50 programs. About the best for outdoor scenes and some variants allow you to import your Daz Studio/Poser models. Drawbacks. Very slow. Need a fast multicore processor. Expensive. By far the most expensive program I ever bought. (Vue Studio). 7) IBL add ons for Daz Studio (Image Based Lighting). e.g LightDome Pro or Reality. Characterised by very sharp, clear lighting. Personally I dont recommend these options. You may as well save your money. IBL takes much longer and I prefer the standard lights of Daz Studio or Poser in any case. 8) Lastly photographs of forests, water and skies make good backgrounds. However because a sharp photo background mismatches with an artistic foreground it is often better if you blur the photo or treat it with one of the those art filters that makes a photo look like an art picture. I use Corel Painter Essentials for this. PLEASE MAKE YOUR SOFTWARE OPINIONS KNOWN. Thanks.

Great image! I use DAZ because it was very free and once I got the hang of it, very intuitive to use Apo is nice, but MB3D is fantastic for its flexibility!

Well my friend, first... another of your stunning renders, and i mean stunning as have been the last few. Got to be Daz for me, i use version 3.1 (free). The lighting is stunning as is the shadows. Never bother with anything but deep shadow maps. Love Bryce, i have had every version since 2. Carrara, ok for some things (up to 7 pro at the moment) And don't use poser enough...that's because i find it annoying to use...

First, a lovely image. Second, I really appreciate your commentary/views on the softwares. I too prefer DAZ, I have DAZ 3A. I agree that LDP is very good global lighting, but I also like the UberEnviornment...though it does make for very long render times. I shouldn't comment on Poser, because though I have Poser Pro 2010, I haven't really made a serious effort to learn the program yet. I will say from observation that Poser seems to do a super job on textures, but that may be just because most MATs are made for Poser and not DAZ. I have the GIMP which is better than Photoshop for some things, but I must say that I like Photoshop's functionality more. It is very expensive, but I only buy things on sale, so I got it at a bargain. I have Bryce also and am just learning to use it for backgrounds...I agree with you there. I have Vue as well (also bought on discount) but again have not made a serious effort to learn it yet. I will have to check out Flaming Pear. Thanks for the discussion.

I agree, a very nice image and what could be more better but to learn the background of how it was created. What's so good about this image is that all your colors compliment each other, the muted, soft tones of the background added depth to the subject. Painter is a great program to create background textures. I've been using it since 2001. But to compose my images, I use Photoshop CS3. I render in different lighting effects in Poser and sometimes I put them together in PS and play with the filters. Never used DAZ because Poser works well with me and I really have no time to try other applications for now.

this is beautiful. I love the pink dress top, it's so delicate and pretty. I use Daz because it's free and I could learn to use it quickly and easily. I like Apophysis for it's light and airy fractals and the 3d scripts. I used to use Bryce but lost everything in a crash and just never installed it again... I found it a bit clunky to use. I gave up on Terragen when T2 came out. I loved Terragen 1, though.

Great image! I started out using Daz and then moved on to Poser. I like Poser 2010 the best, it really does a great job with rendering textures and for realism it is very good. It is easier to use for me than DSA. I have the program and tried to use it and for some reason could not. There are to many plugins for that program it is hard to keep up, the latest being that Lux renderer for realism that seems to be more for props than for characters. With Poser you get many more options than Daz, you have the hair room, the cloth room, the material room etc right out of the box. I really like many of the renders I have seen from Daz and really wanted to get it to work but for me. I take the blame for that. It has nothing to do with the program. I must admit it has come a long way. I just don't have the time to learn how to use it. Poser just seems easier!

Very beautiful image! I seem to use the same tools like you. Except Daz Studio. Tried it a bit, but didn't get a hang of it.
