The 'European Government' want me to take a course on how to drive a lorry. Only been doing it for ten years! Hey, so what do I know? They want me to know how the transmission works, how to spot an illegal stowaway hiding under my van. Speed limits,fair enough, but other stuff that in no way relates to my work, pooh! God help the first illegal that hides under my van, he will get squished on the first of many speed humps I have to drive over. Now the good part. I show up for the course and they wont let me do it because I couldn't prove who I was!!!!! Driving license no good as it's not a Photo One, tacho card with my picture on it no good. Bank Cards, lived at the same address for last 20 years, National Insurance number, No, no good! A passport would be OK, only I do not have one as have no intention of traveling abroad. They sent me the damned notice that I had to do the course, so the department who sent me the letter know who I am! So I get the forms for a photo driving license, and what do they want as proof of ID, birth certificate and a pay slip! That's it. I need less to prove who I am to get a Photo Driving License than I do to take the course! Will it get bad drivers off the road? No. Do you have to pass this course? No. All you have to do it sit on your backside for 5 days listening to some guy drone on and on about stuff you aren't interested in, and you get a certificate to say that you attended and now have a sore backside, but you are now qualified and safe to drive a lorry! So how much money have they wasted setting up these courses across the European countries, hundreds of thousands I expect. Bloody European Government. I'd burn my passport if I had one.
