Description
I posted a photo a week or so ago of a turtle on its back, struggling to right itself. Many asked if i helped it and i answered in the post the day after. The short story is no, i did not help it - the longer story is in the text of the upload afterwards.
The survival rate of a baby turtle is horrendously small, no-one knows for sure it seems. I have seen estimates ranging from 1 in 100 to 1 in 10,000 (each using slightly different term for "survival" - ie reach the shore, make it to 2 weeks, or make it to reproductive age). At the centre in Oman i went to they used the 1 in 10,000 to reach adulthood. Certainly it isnt easy. Reaching the sea isnt the end of the race, I saw a number of gulls sweep in and grab turtles from the surface and fly off for their breakfast (baby turtles cannot dive yet).
Anyway - this one reached the shoreline, beyond that i dont know...
Enjoy!

Stunning capture Rich.I believe they lie so many eggs as to make up for the poor survival rate.
