Description

When I was thirteen years old and living in Italy, I came across some old books on alchemy in the Livorno Army Station library. I was captivated by the photographs of artists depictions of ancient alchemical laboratories inhabited by magician-like alchemists with long flowing white beards ensconced amidst their brick hearths and glass retorts. They were always depicted pouring over ancient tomes written in Latin, with loose pages cascading out onto the floor. These laboratories were invariably lined with all manner of mysterious shelves overflowing with unspecified magical potions and arcane apparatus. You know the drill, eye of newt, spiders beard, crystallized frog’s breath, etc. The inference was always there that some complicated mixture of just the right secret ingredients would yield an Elixir brimming with sparkling power. Unfortunately, my dog Jupiter got hold of my favorite alchemy book and chewed it beyond all recognition. So you see “the dog ate my homework” is not as unrealistic as it may sound. I had to work off the cost to reimburse the library. Still, from that day forward I was hooked on chemistry and eventually minored in it in college. I wound up in my early years as a research bench chemist and played the alchemical wizard for real. There is a moral to this story: never underestimate the power of alchemy (or the discriminating taste of dogs). Created in Ultra Fractal

This is fantastic fractal work! Gorgeous image Stan. And it fits perfectly with your recollection of the alchemist tombs. There will never be a time when people stop seeking the easy way to riches. I do wonder about your dog eating the alchemist book, it might have been fruitful for a day or 2 to follow him around, I'm sure there would be a market for 24K gold scat. :) LOL a slight deviation from the goose that laid the golden egg.

A wonderful creation and a great story to go with it. Your dog had great taste and wanted to know more. I am amazed at how you create these wonderful fractals in UF as no mater how many buttons I press in that program I don't come close to this wonderful result. An outstanding work.

This is absolutely amazing! I love your tale, for I too remember being mesmerised by those old pics of Alchemists. They fired my imagination too. Jupiter is the right name for devouring anything to do with Alchemy I feel! Dogs will be (very greedy and always hungry) dogs.

No, I never underestimate the power of alchemy, when I see THIS!!!! It runs, it glows, it lives. It is not afraid of dogs, who is this? And....now I know where your avatar comes from. (Italy memories)

So that's why the beard on your avatar is long and flowing, but it appears to have been compromised by the colorful fractal that inhabits it! Great quaternion :)
