Description

Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) is a plant belonging to the Asteraceae or Compositae family that grows wild in China, the Andes, European Alps and the Apennines. Its name derives from the greek leon (lion) and pous (foot), in the past was supposed fact that its flowers resemble the limbs of a lion. The genus includes very few species of herbaceous plants and hardy wild growing naturally in the crevices of the rocks are small and the plant barely reaches 20 cm in height. The leaves are covered with silvery hair and joined at the base so as to take the form of a rosette. The flower bracts are fleshy and velvety-white joined together so as to form a star-shaped flower. After prolonged flowering, the bracts fade, leaving the fertilized female flower heads are ready to ripen the seeds. Bella cattura! Buona giornata.

Edelweiss was my mother's favorite song. She had a music box that played it and I loved to hear it. Now I can see what the flower is like. Amazing detail.
