Description

Another image from my trip to Stourhead and follow-up to my last post of the smoking Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip tree) for the many who asked me! The cavalcade of breathtaking vistas from around the garden surprise, inspire and enamour you, in a way that would make Henry Hoare II a proud man. For his garden has matured, and grown into the living work of art he sought to create nearly three centuries ago.

aside from your usually lush treatment of every landscape you make, this has a very special composition. The lush curve of the land & house lead to an opening punctuated by that gorgeous glass-like water, the exquisite tree silhouetted in front (well it's not entirely silhouetted, as we can see some detail in it), what seems almost a companion tree on the other side which reflects in the water (what an eye you have for harmonies!), the beautiful sloping tree-line back there, and your gently dissolving leaves against the light. You gave us a little bit of the leaf-covered lawn upfront, which is like an invitation into the picture; and the overall feeling is of a gentle journey back into light, where we're rewarded with the most lush touches of nature. Beautiful and so finely caught. A gentle gem.
