Description

Old Town Sacramento has a Chinatown area. To get there from my hotel I had to walk through the Westfield Mall. It's a nice enough place and has, under it's roof, the River City Brewery that is a great place for a meal and a pint. Half way through the mall is a children's play area under a large skylight. I stopped to take some pictures of the skylight. After two shots I was approached by two security personnel who told me I could not take pictures inside the mall. When I asked why I was informed that since 9/11 pictures had been prohibited. Apparently they are afraid that Al Qaida might use the images to plan their attack on the mall. To add insult to injury, when I mentioned this to PJ (MrsLubner) she replied that she takes pictures down there all the time and has never had a problem. I guess I look like an out of towner.

I really was amazed you were approached. I've never seen any signs that said photos were not allowed. I'm sure plenty of tourist take them. The dome is a fabulous creation. Sacramento is a lovely city but to think that a terrorist would target it is amazing to me... This is a great shot and I'm glad you were able to get it. I wish everyone could see how lovely this mall is. Not many pedestrian, open air malls are still operating like ours.

Great shot!I remember you saying that. Another oddity is you are not allowed to fish off bridges or docks anymore. 9/11 has affected many things in odd ways. Maybe it is the beard.

Excellent image! Beautiful POV and lighting! I like the way the light captures the thin white lines. I did some research before going to NYC, because I knew I was going to be taking pictures in the subway. I found out that the New York MTA has on their web-page that photography is allowed in public areas and yet there have been incidents where photographers have been harassed by MTA officials and police. Some have taken their case to court and won large settlements. Here is a web-page that states photographer's rights. http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm When I went to New York, I took both it and the copy of the rule written on the NY MTA website. Fortunately I had no problems.

TERRIFIC SHOT! I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY YOLD YOU YOU CAN'T TAKE PICTURES! I TAKE PICTURES EVERYWHERE IN PADOVA, EVEN IN THE PUBLIC GARDEN FULL OF PUSHERS AND OTHER PEOPLE THAT MAY UNDERSTANDABLY OBJECT, AND NO ONE TOLD ME A WORD! PADOVA IS CONSIDERED THE MOST CRIME-RIDDEN TOWN IN THE NORTHEAST. BTW, I ALSO TOOK SHOTS OF COPS UNDISTURBED.

Big Brother everywhere, can't escape it anymore, George Orwell saw it coming - never-the-less this is very neat piece of architectural framing, well captured and immortalized here forever, by you ... BB

Do a bit of research and you'll find the security guard at the mall was mistaken, misinformed, or just plain misleading. A mall is a privately owned piece of property, but it's there specifically for public use. It's a public place, and there is no reasonable expectation of privacy at the mall. You can shoot anything you like there. If a security guard takes your camera or your card, they are committing theft. It's probably a good idea to make a copy of a list (something like this one) and keep it in your camera bag. It's always good to be sure of the ground you're standing on, both literally and legally!
