Description

Kelso Dunes, also known as the Kelso Dune Field, is the largest field of eolian sand deposits (the wind erodes, transports, and deposits sand) in the Mojave Desert. The region is protected by the Mojave National Preserve and is located near the town of Baker, San Bernardino County, California. The dune field covers 45 square miles (120 km2) and includes migrating dunes, vegetation-stabilized dunes, sand sheets, and sand ramps. The tallest dunes rise up to 650 feet (200 m) above the surrounding terrain. Info from Wikipedia. Photo taken in 1996 and scanned. Imagine hiking in a flat barren desert and find yourself facing this sand dune. To big to hike around it and too soft to climb over. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

I played sand greens once. They are actually oiled, a bit packed, and you rake paths toward the cup. Golf balls roll rather nicely. This vast sand trap is a whole lot different. Nice adventurous capture of a dangerous scene! Thanks for sharing!

Extremely cool capture of the giant dune, Dana. I would assume the winds and an occasional earthquake would reshape and resculpture all that sand over time.
