Description

While I’m posting desert cactus, I shot this Cholla cactus in the Saguaro National Park, west of Tucson, Arizona. This is a Jumping Cholla cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida) or Teddy Bear Cholla. It is native to the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The jumping Cholla is a tree-like plant with one low-branching trunk. It often grows to heights of 12 feet (4 meters), with drooping branches of chained fruit. Together, the plants form fantastic looking forests that may range over many acres. Flowers are white and pink, streaked with lavender. They are about one inch (3cm) wide, and are displayed at the joint tips (or old fruit tips), blooming in mid-summer. The spines grow to about an inch (3cm). The "jumping cholla" name comes from the ease with which the stems detach when brushed, giving the impression that the stem jumped onto you. Often the merest touch will leave a person with bits of cactus hanging on their clothes to be discovered later. Info from Wikipedia. Photo taken in 1996 and scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Marvelous! I love a good cactus, and this is as good as they come. I love the colors and the whole visual texture. This is a fantastic shot, very intimate in all of the ways I like. I'd love to grow one of these and enjoy it's company in the comfort of my own home. This is a great piece of photographic work.

This is gorgeous. I remember jumping cactus when I was a kid; they scared me because someone told me if you even got near them, they WOULD jump at you!!

Also called Teddy Bear cactus by locals. It looks soft and huggable but is deadly. :-) I love seeing this on the landscape but I never get near it. Stellar shot.

This is a great shot of a cactus I grew once, never again once was enough it was always sticking in my hand or somewhere and was difficult and painful to remove, and whoever called it the Teddy Bear cactus needs there head examined there is no way you want to cuddle this one, nice shot though.

Great shot of this one; when my parents were living in the desert I'd see vast spreads of these in the local landscape.

Exquisite clarity and detail in this shot of the Cholla cactus, Dana. I can imagine it could be used for cleaning out thermos bottles.
