Description

Can you imagine...you are on trial...you and your defense lawyer sit behind one table, the prosecuting attorney sits behind the other table. A jury of 12 of your peers fills the jury box. The spectator seats are full. A large, uniformed, bald-headed baliff by the name of Bull commands, "All Rise"...and in comes a judge named Harry... Ok, a little dramatic:-))) But this is the courtroom in the Cottonwood Falls, Kansas courthouse that has served so well for the past 137 years. There's a lot more of the native walnut wood we saw in the staircase in this room...polished and ready to add dignity to the setting of the next court case. We heard there were jail cells through one of those doors...must be the one on the left. Those are the judge's chambers on the right. The ceiling is the original embossed tin. A rare sight anywhere in 2010. Everything else is as it was in 1873 except the paint, the carpet and the light fixtures. We were free to go wherever we wanted in here...but the dignity of the room kept us quiet and almost tiptoeing around while moving our tripods and taking our pictures. Great shot. I love the glow of the walnut and the tin ceiling is grand. There are still some tin ceilings in various places that can be seen.

Beautiful photo of an old-time, classic court room. I wonder what the recess in the back wall behind the judge's seat is for? Original embossed tin ceiling? My, they've really preserved that building beautifully! That's EXTREMELY rare! I see a TV and video with projection screen in the corner - something modern has come in. But no "security docket" for potentially violent criminals. I assume they try non-violent cases here, considering how modern day cases can be. A lot of open space in front of the bar. Thanks for the photo!

Embossed tin! I've never heard of that, very interesting indeed. The whole scene is extremely imposing, as you suggest!

The older court rooms definitely had more dignity than our newer ones. We got a brand new one a few years ago, and it felt more like a walk-in closet. This one is beautifully done, and you captured it well. It is easy to imagine it filled with spectators, lawyers, judge, and jury. I always get jury duty. :-)

Great shot - I love this older style court room. I just finished jury duty and our courtrooms are all industrial, modernistic. Even the judge's desk looked like it came from Ikea. Well done.

I used to work in an old building that had rooms like this. They do command a certain respect. Beautiful shot!!

A judge named Harry? Actually, I never gave much thought about being a judge, or even an attorney. But I have been a juror on several occasions. In any case, fine lighting and courtroom ambience in this tripod mounted capture, Bill.

You have caught the majesty of this beautiful room in this wonderful capture. I love the wonderful wooden patina and the warmth of this room even though I guess it handles some nasty cases.

I know embossed tin was used in earlier days in this country, and it could be quite beautiful. Overall this room is indeed solemn, and I can understand that it would elicit silence from you & tara as you walked through it. You caught it with a characteristic mix of clarity and an indescribable touch of softness. The 'softness' comes from your patina, a quiet glow you get in interiors often. The wall lights are spilling (flared), which gives real warmth to the room; and the blue highlights on the rails & a few other places are luscious. It's a fine shot, with a very warm underglow; and you caught the quiet that you spoke of with your lens. But you didn't sacrifice its light one bit...Makes me want to be there!

There really was a sense of weight in the room. I know I could have gone anywhere in there, but I found myself hanging back, taking telephoto shots of things I could have just as easily walked right up to. You've capture that feeling here ... excellent image!

Beautiful shot, here, Bill. This is one magnificent building. I remember we had the same reaction when we were there - we were almost whispering when we talked. Your exposure is right on the money, my friend! This is definitely a fave for me!
