Description
I spent a couple of days in the Ouachita Mountains on and below the Thalimena Scenic Drive. I tried to time it just right to catch the autumn colors in full array, made several calls to the area and was given the green light, the colors are beautiful the voice on the other in of the line said, I thanked her kindly and packed my bags.
I left my house 2:30 Sunday Morning in order to get on the mountain before the sun came up and find the perfect location for an early morning shoot. Going along the drive in total darkness and judging by the light of my headlights I couldn’t see a lot of color. Talking to myself, ok don’t get disappointed wait until the sun comes up things will look different in the sun light. Temporarily convincing myself I turned my attention to the approaching sun just beginning to lighten the eastern sky. Finding what I thought would be an optimal photographic location I set up my equipment. The wind was blowing what seemed to be 40 miles an hour with nothing to break the wind it was cold. I put on my sweatshirt, a hoody, and a vest covering my baldhead with a hat and I was set.
Watching the rising sun it soon became painfully obviously this was not where I needed to be throwing my equipment back in the truck I began to case the sun. Running 70 MPH across the top on the mountain and hoping no praying a deer or a bear didn’t run out in front of me; I was on a mission. Mildly complaining under my breath about leaving at 2:30 to give myself plenty of time to get where I needed to be only to find my self running out of time and having to drive like a mad man casing the sun. Suddenly I could see a beautiful red color between the trees but could not find a clear enough place to stop and take even one shot. Ever time there was a turn out the sun was on the wrong side of the mountain so on I went.
I probably drove 30 miles trying to get that shot to no avail, I found the perfect spot about 10 minutes to late the red was just about gone, oh well it’s still pretty here and there is still plenty of sunrise to shoot, again talking to myself. I haven’t started answering myself yet so I guess I am ok. I shot this on the Arkansas side of the drive about 8 am after the morning and I had settled down. Oh, the full array of colors not so much very spotty at best but you take what you can get, make the best of the situation, when life gives you lemons……………………………….right?.
Thanks for stopping by and for any comments you car to leave!

Very beautiful capture! actually it is okay to talk to yourself and it is even okay to answer yourself. It's not even bad to argue with yourself, BUT if you argue with yourself and LOSE your arguements then you have a problem.

sounds frustrating but the shot really is beautiful - at least you were able to salvage it and get something beautiful

You make lemonade. Stellar silhouetting and sepialike tones in this super shot!

from the Mina end would afford a better sunrise but Cavanal Hill in Poteau would even be better. from my trip through the Poteau area a week ago Saturday the leafs were far superior on the northeast side of Poteau than Talimena your capture is excellent and very beautiful

Oh this sounds so familiar. I once drove 40 miles trying to find a hole in the cloud cover to shoot a total eclipse of the moon. Never did find it. This turned out to be some great lemonade. Very serene, beautiful image.

It sounds like you had quite an adventure in the Ouachita Mountains! I can imagine the anticipation of capturing the autumn colors in their full array. It's interesting to hear about your experience finding the perfect my location for your early morning shoot and the challenges you faced along the way. Despite the difficulties, your determination paid off with a beautiful shot on the Arkansas side of the drive. It's true that sometimes we have to make the best of the situation, and it seems like you did just that. Well done!
