Description
Prior to my trip I had contacted Tara (AuntieTK) and Bill (bmac62) about meeting them when I arrived in Washington. The plan was to have lunch and visit the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden. We met at the Marriott Hotel near the airport only to discover we had stumbled into a convention of the Red Hot Society.
The Red Hat Society is a social group founded in 1998 for women approaching the age of 50 and beyond. It bills itself as an international "disorganization" of middle-aged women who live with gusto and wear - what else? - bright red hats.
The founder of the Society is artist Sue Ellen Cooper, who lives in Fullerton, California. In 1997, Cooper gave a friend a 55th birthday gift consisting of a red fedora purchased a year earlier at a thrift store along with a copy of Jenny Joseph's poem "Warning." The poem begins:
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
Yes they looked a little silly and drew lots of attention. But that was the point.

Wonderful, Mark! Thankyou! But why are they SO SERIOUS looking! I believe Tara post a montage of this oh so glum and 'middle-class' gathering and pointed out the same thing. I want to ask them if they wear hats, red or not, to go shopping, walk the dog, visit their friends, drive the car.... One of the many virtues of driving a Volvo is that the interior height accomodates headwear! A very popular car with Orthodox Jews. Wait till you see my insect fascinator! Hehe!

They're obviously very at home with their headwear - great capture Mark!

Fantastic capture, Mark and a wonderful dedication. I agree with Andrea that they seem a bit severe and somber fof a group dedicated to the lines in the poem
