Description

The absurdist side of my brain (and let's face it, that's pretty much all of my brain) sees the world in an odd way. For instance, I ponder a lot of strange questions about the vagaries of the universe. At this time of year I wonder, for instance, are autumn leaves having a big, flashy party before they die and fall to the ground, a sort of last-gasp Mardi Gras as they flame out to extinction? I imagine the conversation at one party going something like this: FIRST LEAF (Frank): More champagne, Roger? SECOND LEAF (Roger): Thank's Frank, don't mind if I do...AAAACCCCKKKK! THIRD LEAF (Gloria): Well...there went Roger. FOURTH LEAF (Nigel): My Gloria, you're a stunning shade of red today...well...at least you were. FIRST LEAF: (Frank): More caviar, Nigel? Nigel? I also wonder about other strange questions, like, do snowflakes ever snuggle together to keep from turning into ugly globs of ice? There's a reason why people take psychiatric medication and write comedy. Photographed in the gutter on Bernard Street near Lawrence Avenue in the Albany Park area of Chicago on November 5, 2010.

Simply hilarious, and yeah...I've often wondered if snowflakes huddle together to keep from getting warm...eh, it's that whole xeno-logic thing. Anyway, this is a fantastic shot and I remember when you made it. Funny how cold a day that was...it kinda shows here, but maybe it's just the light quality. This is a great piece of seasonal work. I love the little urban bit of the abandoned newsprint or whatever that is. It works well. Overall this is a fantastic shot and a hilarious and witty write up. Great stuff.

WONDERFULLY funny, Corey!! I shall find my perceptions of the autumn coloured by your thoughts. Thats what comes of quitting chlorophyll.

Love the multiple, subtle shades of yellow/gold/brown/green, the flat nearly-winter light, and your comedic narrative! Excellent post.

When I was a kid watching cowboy movies, I always wondered when they went to the bathroom. I also thought that if you jumped INTO the TV, you'd be right THERE--but fortunately, I never tried. So, yeah, absurdness is rampant and ain't it great!! Also great is your shot and greater still is your story!!

(Sorry about the repeated ebots, I'm not doing too well tonight!) GREAT writing Corey, you packed a punch of comedy into 5 lines of dialogue! Great work! And I agree with chip that that piece of paper is a great addition to the whole. Most of us would take a shot of a gutter & think, "naaah, not enough going on". You take a shot of a gutter & turn it into a comedy routine. I love the shot, love the words, and I hope you're healing each day, and getting tons of rest: You deserve it after the ordeal you came through. I'll be back for more again soon. Great upload, and loved the mini-play! Keep getting better!

Oh, what a shot... It took me six calendar days to get here Corey but I am sure glad I arrived and very likely just in time. Problem is I've called and called for Frank but he is nowhere to be found. I see trees in my mind's eye view of Chicago (leaf situation is ahead of Seattle) as a bar at closing time mid-week. There is a bartender swiping a somewhat overused barcloth on the top of the bar where just an hour ago there were a couple of dozen drinkers elbow to elbow. There's a lonely waitress wiping off empty table tops in dim corners with nobody there. In ten minutes they'll be turning off the lights and won't reopen again until late April or early May! See what you've done to my thinking this morning:-))) Wonder where all those jaundiced bodies go...when I was a kid, everybody cremated them...today a little leaf smoke and you get a visit from both the police department and the fire department:) Really creative piece!!!

We don't have many wild parties of autumn leaves. The leaves around here are mostly conservative and if green was alright for their parents, it's alright for them. The few that do change can't seem to get it right and go straight to the AAAACCCCKKKK with no party in between. We do have Crepe Myrtles that party a lot. They congregate at the hottest place in town, a local car wash. There they find a secluded corner and swirl and dance until they lie exhausted or drift away. They have been observed in this frenzied ritual by lube techs and an office manager, with nothing better to do. Very funny narrative and excellent shot! You have very pretty gutters this time of year. Beautiful colors and detail. It looks like there is a moderate in the mix. The little guy in the top right corner kept a bit of his green.

Really super shot of those leaves, I always love the colorful leaves in the fall. What's great is that there's so much subtle variation in this, while they are all a beautiful gold, there's enough of that variation to really make this a rich feast for the eyes. As for the leaf-party, it'd be funny to see what kinds of mixed-drinks they come up with, wouldn't it?
