Description

This is the spaceship I used (with a little enhancement) as the background in my last post "Delaney on the Space Station." Bill mentioned that he'd like to see the original airbrush painting, so here it is in it's unmodified version. I did this painting many years ago, when I was doing a lot of fooling around with airbrushing. If I ever get to a point where I'm not trying to do 17 things all at the same time, I may have to get the airbrushes out again. I kinda miss it, in a way. The clean-up is a little more involved than with Poser or Photoshop, though... The stars were 'painted' by dripping a little paint on an old toothbrush, then 'flicking' the bristles with my finger. The nebulous effects were created by just airbrushing light colored paint over the edge of torn paper. The background and stars were painted first, with the area occupied by the spaceship masked off with frisket paper. The details of the ship were added last. I actually based the painting on a photo I took of a model of this spaceship I had when I was a kid - and apparently Mike (mrestey) had the same one as well - we're riding the same cosmic wind, I think! LOL! I don't remember what the ship was called, but I think it was from some obscure, short-lived TV show. By the way..... If you like space-scapes, check out Dave Archer's website. This guy is phenominal - and he 'paints' with a MOST unusual technique - a million volts! Dave Archer. Don't try this at home.... UPDATE: YES!!!!! I just knew someone would come up with the name of this ship! Thanks, Colin, you're right on the money - it was the Lief Erikson!! Looks like a number of us built this model. Lief Erikson information. UPDATE #2: Great googly-moogly! I've stumbled into a goldmine of information about this ship! I had no idea.... Check this link: Lief Erikson 3D! Blueprints, 3D renders, wavefront meshes, textures, even a couple versions powered by model rocket engines. Amazing.. BTW, if you have an original model of this ship, hang on to it! Thanks again for all the comments, ratings, and faves!

I've seen Dave Archer's works and he pays a price for those fantastically beautiful creations of his. Well done with the air-brushing here.

I could be mistaking, but I think I built the same model in my days also. I always have a hard time airbrushing on black background, or is that airbrushing a black background? The overspray is usually present unless I use frisket. Nice job!

Fantastic work, Rod. Airbrushing is one of those things I never tried. Love it more with PS though. You did an amazing work with the details and with the background too.

I built the same model. It even came with a shuttle.

It does look familiar. It looks like it could have come from any of a number of scifi books I've read over the years.

As a child, I never could convince my parents to buy me the original version of this model (more decades ago than I would like to admit), but I always liked it - I think it was called the "Lief Ericsson". Years later, I bought the reissue, which for some reason was made out of glow-in-the-dark plastic. It might even still be in my basement somewhere... Coincidentally, several years later again, I remember reading that Larry Niven had based his military ship in the novel "The Mote in God's Eye" on this same model.

glad you posted this by it's self. It's always a treat on this site to see hand painted artwork. I kinda miss airbrush too. ...but then I remind myself of the time I was seconds away from the final stroke on a garth brooks picture (for my Mom it was a portrait, face and hat 3x3), I was working on the eye when the gun jamned and spit Paint. I did just a little too much wipeing and ruined the picture. ...I think I like that undo button too much now - lol

I too had a model of this ship - though the model I had was a glow in the dark model. It had hinged bay doors, and a small craft as well. Mine did not have a name, and was part of one of the old Star Trek Model lines, sold as just Alien U.F.O. (I had a set of them, including a Klingon D-7, Enterprise, and Romulan Bird Of Prey, forget which company it was but want to say EMT).
