Description
The former Amsterdam Main Post Office is situated at the Damrak behind the Royal Palace. It was built in the period 1895-1899 designed by government architect C.H.Peters. The building was built in a mixture of neo-styles, especially neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance elements were used (aka Gothic-post offices). It is among the Top 100 of Dutch UNESCO monuments.
Amsterdam locals jokingly call the building 'Pear Burg', referring to the pear-shaped towers.
The former main post office since 1992 is used as the Magna Plaza shopping mall. Here you will find clothes shops, cafes, restaurants, a large music store and jewelry boutiques.
