Description
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae

Awesome post Jenny. Excellent choice of images for today. I just quoted this poem on Mies's page. She had also posted an image of a poppy. I was not sure if the poppy has the same symbolism in other countrys that it has here in Canada. Thank you for the timely post.

Thanks Jenny for this touching poem. I didn't know for sure, the poppy was a symbol of the battle. Your picture also has a great mood as in the poem, and a great pov.

The image has the same meaning in the States, but I'm afraid the younger generations don't remember that meaning. And that's a shame for them--or for the older generations who haven't taught them what the poppies mean. Thank you for reminding us with your beautiful picture.

wonderful! I do remember. So nicely done my dear. The new generation is hopeless I think at times. Our parents may have thought the same of us.
