Description
The Nine Muses Sarcophagus (a decretive stone coffin) was made about 230 AD. Roman style and made of marble. As the title indicates there are nine Muses plus Apollo, and Athena on the front. If I had caught the sides, you would see Ulysses, listening to the Sirens. Muses are Goddesses of creative inspiration in poetry, song and other arts; the companions of Apollo and the daughters of Jupiter. My research indicates that this is not a copy. Thalia (comedy)
Melpomene (tragedy)
Erato (love poetry)
Deceased as Apollo (sun god)
Athena (goddess of wisdom)
Calliope (epic poetry)
Terpsichore (dance and choral song)
Urania (astronomy)
Clio (history)

Superb! This is such a wonderful capture. Ah, the Muses...they're such interesting mythological critters...and naturally Athena and Apollo would have to be involved with them in some way...of the members of the ancient Greek Pantheon, they were the most complex beings...and better behaved than their sibling/counterparts/parents. I love the details in this and yeah...it's most definitely a zoomer! Great work.

This is the one I was reminding my Mom about the other day! If memory serves me correctly about this piece, it was actually used as a kind of crematoria of its time. (don't quote me on that one though, it's been a while). But I have always loved this piece. Wonderful shot!
