Description

This caught my eye, a dragon or eagle head I thought. It was from a natural root over rock Yew tree. The tree has grown on top of a huge rock seemingly 5 meters (16ft) above the soil. Its roots supporting a 15 meter high tree by clinging to the rock. In some areas the roots are cascading down the rock surface like water. Their usual secondary job of anchoring the tree is upgraded for some. They lash the tree to the rock like strong ropes. It is a dream find for me, I have grown this style as a Bonsai. Finding it in the wild had me walking around and around the huge bolder. I saw my wife's puzzled face as I behaved like a school boy finding treasure. Talking to myself about the determination of a tree to survive when it finds itself growing in such an unlikely spot. It has somehow grow to maturity and hung on in all weathers in an exposed windy area. It roots have cracked open tons of rock as they have grown bigger and stronger in their search for soil. I must be mad I find myself wanting to bow at it's achievment. The white van is on it's way!

I would have reacted exactly the same way - a growing tree will do anything to survive. Splitting rocks is a doddle, so hanging on for life on to them is just another string to the bow. Makes me feel very small....smaller than the tiny toadstools that are growing in there.

That would have been my reaction too when I saw this great tree growing out of the rock, it really does deserve to live to a great age after the struggle it must have had in its youth. A wonderful capture.
