Description

Constantijn Huygens Born in Den Haag / The Hague 4 september 1596 and almost 100 years later died there too 28 maart 1687 (!) was working for several Princes of Orange (militairy leaders / kind of Heads of State in the time of the Republic - William III, married to Mary Stuart II, was also King of England until his dead in 1705 - for him the Orange Mars is still held in Ireland) had a wonderful house in The Hague center.. but when he wanted to get away from the government center he went to his little house Hofwijck (litterly "to go away from the governmentcenter"). Here his son Christiaan Huygens discovered the rings of the Planete Saturn (or recognized them as such, as they had been seen before, but not as rings) and he also discovered the moon Titan (the Huygens probe landed there in 2004)... This little house (30 Dutch feet by 30 Dutch feet (about 9 meter by 9 meter) is still standing and now a little but wonderful museum. I was there today (inside) for the first time of my life... So great to stand there ..and stare at the moon.. from the same windows the Huygens family did almost 400 years ago...

A very interesting house. It's built all the way down to the waterline. They must have one heck of a time keeping their basement dry! Nice photo.

Were you allowed to take pictures inside? And what are the images on the front of the house? A marvelous picture, the house is beautiful!
