Description
When choosing images to include in a professional presentation we need to place ourselves in the position of an editor or agent who has seen countless portfolios and perhaps many on the same day she or he is viewing ours. As best as possible, we need to consider what this person is looking for before presenting our work. Portfolios are easily customizable and we should always consider retooling the selection and order of our images for each and every presentation. If you are not sure exactly what is being looked for in your portfolio the best approach is to focus upon what you know or believe your strengths to be. We are all good at some things and weaker at others. Accentuate the positive in your work and you will always feel more confident handing your portfolio across a desk. Whatever the outcome you will know you "showed your best" at this particular time. Self editing is always tough work, but it is essential if you are serious about showing your art. This process is fluid and you should practice and refine your methods of presentation as much as any other aspect of your craft. —T. R. Bolan, on selecting images for presentationThe words above are from a trio of composite works I posted here a year ago this week. The links below will take you back there if you are interested in reading more. I include this quote today because this post is an example of the process I described last November. This is the current display panel of my home page which I uploaded earlier today. I am posting it to the gallery because it may inspire others to create something similar. Obviously I am encouraging you to do this. The recent addition of new features to the home page nudged me to complete this display. I have actually been working at it, on and off, since about March. So .. don't look at this and say: "Oh, I could never do that." You can do anything!... it just takes a hell of a lot more time than we ever imagine at the start. ;-) The important point I want to make is that you don't have to do something as elaborate as this. It's Your home page, you can and should do what makes you happy. The only unbreakable rule is that the image must not exceed 800 wide. You can upload a currently favorite image or one that you feel best exemplfies your work. It is one more place to exhibit your craft on site and it is a very important place. The primary reason why you should give consideration to posting something special on your home page is because this is where people go to learn about you once they have discovered and become interested in your art. It is at such a moment that we have a chance, a one-time chance, to make a clear impression on an interested visitor. I encourage questions and opinions about this idea within this thread. I will go into more detail then. With warm regards, Terry

I have already admired this beautiful collection/collage on its place... and it's worth to repeat it: "Portraits in Firelights and Shadow" is the essence of your imagery, Terry... :) Vashek PS: The render I have named for you earlier today is finished and uploaded now...

I went to you home page when I got your note this morning and I was truely impressed and I know why you made the invite (I am having stability issues with the home pages since they made the "upgrade" making it almost impossilbe to click on menu items, reason for my comment). I remember reading all those portfolio words and they were the main reason I added you to my fave list - there was depth that went beyond the images. I do keep my home page somewhat current so now I will have to fix it up again, and now I have more encouragement to do so. A few images went through my mind when I saw your work early this AM.

This is so wonderful - I love the thoughtful way you have chosen your words and images and put together this beautiful piece of work. It certainly is an inspiration. The days when I used to lug a real portfolio around (as an art student) are long gone but perhaps now I should take a look at my own homepage (untouched for over a year) and see if I can present it in a more appealing way. Thank you for sharing your word, wisdom and wonderful art.
