Well, I showed this picture of these bizarre things/nests to my hubby and his first thought was swallows...so he quickly looked up online and they are made by mud swallows. Very cool nests!! A lot of work!! He said if you Google mud swallows you will find pics of the colony of nests and birds on the edge of them.

made by swallows. You find a lot of these in inside barns in the Midwest and Great Plains areas.

These are wonderful! At first I thought they might be insect hives--wasps or something...well...wasps, but when others said that they're swallows' nests, that made more sense, especially because they have those big openings. This is really well seen. I like it a lot. You have such a good eye for this sort of thing; and it's under a bridge, eh? That's even better! I really like this. I'd love to see more. Do you have any close ups? I just thought of a challenge...since you captured the nests, I wonder how easily you could capture the little feathered people who built those nest! Just a thought. I like this quite a lot. It's making a trip into my favorites.

Very cool under-the-bridge capture, Jock. The mud nests/homes really look bizarre. And, I'm going to swallow my pride and admit I didn't know that these were built by swallows.

I'm very familiar with the swallow's nest. They are in huge colonies out here under the bridges over the river. They swoop down and skim the water in the evenings. Lovely capture.

Very accurate picture of a bird shelter under a bridge, most of the time, these nests are found it seems to me in the big stall stables, attics, etc. ...
