Description

Inside the Watchtower, there is a circular wall mural painted by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. This large mural, deep in natural reds, orange and yellows, greets visitors as they enter the Watchtowers second floor. The painting is a pictorial telling of the ‘Snake Legend’ (lower right), the Hopi story (left side) and the first travelers down the winding and treacherous Colorado River (upper right). I love this image! The rich ocher colors are absolutely fantastic and the graphic nature of so called "primitive" art stands out superbly here! I love the stylized figures and the rich symbolic motif of the snake in various incarnations...the smaller snakes, the overall coiled snake. I love every aspect of this and it's incredibly well seen. This is great.

I agree with chipka's comments, this style of art is extremely symbolic and easy on the eyes. It's funny that a lot of more 'modern' art seems to try to come back to this.
