Description

At 98 she is the senior most citizen in our locality. Her spirit is unmatchable. She worked as a housemaid until she was 90. well, she built a new house where once it was a thatched one. Besides five daughters she had, she adopted two boys, one died later. Her son now looks after her . I am privileged to be with her. I said she has an amazing Spirit, because she survived a dreadful skin disease about three decades ago in which she lost her finger tips from her both hands and legs. Even now she has only partial sensation on her limbs. After many years of treatment when she was finally completely healed, she had to face another trial, no one would give her any job because of the fear of the disease she had. Her husband was a drunken man and would not give her any money. With her six children, there were many mouths to feed. It was then my mother who gave her a job at home, because she knew she was treated by a reputed charitable hospital and they wont let her go without full proof that she was completely healed. At that time there were five small children including myself at home. This created a confidence among people. Slowly she started getting offers from many houses. Did I say she worked until she was 90 years old. Her main job was sweeping the yard. I have never seen any other servants doing that job with such perfection. She had to put efforts to hold the broom properly with her broken fingers. She did it with honesty. That was her religion. Her name is Mariam. We call her Mariamma Chedathy ( additions we give for names to show respect, like Mom in English) Am I not privileged to be with her? Yes, I am with a Heroine, with a Heroine of a Century.

She certainly IS special! Thank you so much for sharing her very, very inspiring story with us. This woman is a true role model for mothers, single and otherwise, every where. Dealing with such a horrible disease (I'm thinking possibly leprosy?) and then providing not only for her blood children, but her adopted children of her heart. I'm so glad that she found employment with your family and has people who care for her. It touched me when you talked about her sweeping the yard. People today seem to feel work such as that is beneath them...but everyone from the ruler of a country right down to those who sweep yards or streets are valuable humans. There is no shame in hard work! I hope that this lady now has a chance to rest and enjoy the fruits of her labors. Thanks again for sharing!

She is a beautiful and strong woman, to be able to take care of her children, and help your mother with hers. And your mother, too, is a heroine, to employ her when no others would.
