Description

The now banned pesticide DDT is ubiquitous in soils throughout California. This is because enormous tracts of land were once citrus orchards that were crop dusted from the air with millions of tons of the chemical. In orchards that still exist, if DDT concentrations are abnormally high, fruit crops may be at risk (be patient; I am going somewhere with this). DDT does not appreciably biodegrade over time so what was there once is there now. One way to test for DDT soil concentrations is to sample rain runoff from orchard fields. To do this, of course, it is necessary to wait for rain events. I was hired by a Buddhist monastery with a large, still active orange orchard to test their fields for DDT. OK, now we get to the art part. When it rains in California, it usually does so in the nighttime. It was, therefore, in the wee hours of the morning that I found myself on the monastery grounds taking rain runoff samples for chemical analysis. The orchard trees undulating over the hills were lit by a full moon. The monastery in the middle ground was illuminated by soft ground lights. It was a very ornate, colorfully painted old building with artful stucco moldings. The fragrance from the orchards after newly fallen rain was intoxicating ambrosia. It was utterly silent save for the musical, rhythmic, chirping of crickets. Suddenly, unexpectedly, still long before sunrise, the monks began their early morning chanting devotions. The whole scene had the ambience of some Elysian pastoral gift from heaven. I was utterly mesmerized by the beauty and transfixed by it. Someday, I thought, I am going to share this. This is that day. I hope you like it. Created in Ultra Fractal using various morphed Mandelbulb and Juliabulb formulas.

This is magnificent UF work Stan. It on first glance looks like bulb work on MB3D. But on closer inspection it has areas that MB program would not be able to create. The problems with DDT contamination are long lasting and ongoing, years after it was banned. There was a case in western Canada 3 years ago where a golfer died after licking his golf ball clean ( I know there is more wonder about why he was licking his balls), it turned out the golf course was using a derivitive of Agent orange to defoliate the fairways. Agent orange is a rather nasty chemical the american military developed during the vietnam war to defoliate the jungles of asia.
