Description
Yesterday I posted a photo of a giant drill taken at a tour of a construction site in Malmoe, Sweden (see my previous post). I promised to follow it up with the cutting machine, so here it is.
The rectangular cutting head of this machine is lowered onto a guide frame on the ground and the cutting head is placed in the frame. The wheels with the teeth are rotated, grinding up the rock between the holes made by the giant drill. A clay slurry is piped onto the hole and sucked up, bringing with it all the chewed up rock. The method is precise down to a centimeter (less than an inch). This is much better than pile driving (very little noise. And, not to mention blasting with explosives!). The cutting head is to the right in the photo. The machine can be rotated 360 degrees, like any crane.
Tomorrow I'll post a photo of the cutting head face on, showing the machinery inside.
Enjoy!

Fascinating piece of machinery...but you know me, I like all big machines that make noise!

:-)... Looks like something from Thunderbirds. Interesting bit of kit and thanks for the info.

That's a really cool machine, it must be amazing to watch it cutting through rock! Great shot that shows all of the complexity of the vehicle as well as a good look at those impressive teeth!
