Description

New Lincoln Station Star Name: Lalande 21185 Distance from Earth: 8.312 light Years Heavy Metal Abundance: 63% of Sol There was a great deal of study devoted to this nearby star in the early 21st century, and debate over its nature (is it a "halo population" star?) probably will continue in academic circles for some time. What concerns most of humanity now is that this star is close enough for it to serve as a Rephi Portal anchoring point, and can reach outwards to several other stars. The presence of a small rocky worldlet just outside of the "habitable zone" has also made it ideal for a station-based colony, as this system has evolved into a major transport hub. The presence of a smaller gas giant and an assortment of varied moons also presents the inhabitants with a good source for the necessary raw materials they need, in a mostly benign environment. The only drawback is that the star is a "flare star" although not as extreme as some of the more dramatic systems. These flares mean that the station has to be better protected that would be the case in Earth orbit, but the low number of asteroids and comets in such an old system makes navigation much easier. New Lincoln Station is a very successful colony, serving as a major hub and providing for nearly all of its own needs through local sources. This makes the station one of the "bright jewels" in humanity's ever-expanding region, and will probably remain so for several generations, at the very least. --------------- Station and ships all modeled/rendered in Bryce 6, Textures are mostly my own, or altered presets. Stars, nebula and planet are all Photoshop CS3, compositing and other post working also Photoshop. This time I decided to move away from the grubby side of space to look at the more successful side. Enjoy the view, and as always comments, critiques, and suggestions are quite welcome.

Holy frak! I think I know that star. Yeah, flare stars are kinda cool, but you need flare umbrellas to get near them...I'm sure they have one here...just off screen. Anyway, back to that holy frak thing...this is amazing! I love the details, the sense of scale, the sense of reality...the details...the mood. Everything. It's quite amazing, and the story you've crafted pulls me right in. What really impresses me is the fact that this humdinger of a station has 4 habitat rings? Impressive. Somebody's been busy and they're expecting lots of other busy people to stick around, so they need housing modules to stick 'em all into! I love that implication, and the attention to detail you're showing here, and in all of your work! This rocks. More please!

!!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!! I think Chip said it all.... I'll go along with the whole 'Holy Frak' thing. What amazes me is how you manage to produce these so quickly, and yet maintain the incredible quality and detail. I would expect to see something like this as the opening scene in another Avatar, Star Wars, or Star Trek movie. Absolutely brilliant!

Really nice one! Background, planet, station, ships, everything's great, and gives a good idea of the station's size.
