Description

Greetings Everybody Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I caught this scorpion in my house two weeks ago and took some photos of it. I just couldn't resist the temptation. These scorpions like hard soil. They dig burrows as sometimes as deep as 1m and is generally known as the yellow legged burrowing scorpion. I believe this one somehow knew that we will get lots of rain, so it decided to come into the house. I am just glad that I saw it and didn't step on it. Hope you all have a wonderful day and thanks for your previous comments. Regards Colene

Sorry I don't know much about scorpions..........would you die if you got stung? Big hairy spiders are the stuff of my nightmares, but I'm sure these guys could come a close second. Whilst in Sedona Arizona a few years back, I bought a scorpion encased in clear resin from one of those roadside stalls! Great shot.

Lucky you, Colene! I can just see the sting under the top of the tail. The closest I got to one was in Hoedspruit - they can squash themselves very flat to get under something! Well done, Clive

@ Blinkings - This particular scorpion is not highly venomous. An easy way to know is to look at the pinchers and the tail. Scorpions with thick tails and small pinchers are usually more venomous than those with big pinchers and thin tails. This one will cause a headache and some pain, but it won't kill you.

A fine portrait of a creature only a mother could love, or maybe not since I believe they are a bit cannibalistic. :~) Have heard scorpions fluoresce under a black light and that if you've found one in the house there are likely more.

@USAnomad - I have walked in the dark with a special light before and they do shine in the dark. I don't know if it is all the species though. I think it is only certain scorpions. @Rockstrider - I caught it in a plastic cup. It was night when I caught it. I kept it captive during the night and the next morning I took it far from the house and released it so that I can take photos of it. Thanks for all your kind comments. :)
