Description

Adam had come to present her to the queen. They had taken her away from her mother the day of her first birthday: now, five years later, she was the Chosen One and would become queen. Adam pushed her forward towards the matron who peered from the chaise longue. "Go, Sihsis (Eve), don't be afraid! The queen will be a mother for you." An encouraging Adam had whispered at her ear. Eve curtseyed and waited, as she had been taught. "Is that her?" the woman asked her voice strangely thin for her size, "This wee thing! I wonder whether she'll make it." The question was purely rhetorical. The queen had lost her faith long ago. Now she was only interested in the gifts the Rogues offered her. Silk clothes and elegant furniture for digging holes in the desert. "Her bloodline has many queens back to the first Naga." Adam pointed out. "Her family! just a bunch of snobs." The queen snarled. "Well, did a slug eat your tongue, child?" "How should I call you? Queen, My Lady Mother, or Mom?" Eve stammered. "My Lady Mother is fine. However Sihsis, one can't master love, and I'm not fond of you. But it's good that you know loneliness early. You and I, we are different and diversity results in solitude. There will never be love for you, so get used to it!" JS woke up. He had dozed off. The fever was bringing back Eve's deepest memories, that part of her that he had always respected as she had done with him. "Damn pod!" JS cursed against the med-care unit which prevented him from cuddling Eve, holding her close to him. "Out, old hag!" he mind-shouted, using his love for her like a mind-sword, "Eve, I'm here." Eve turned and smiled and ran up hugging him tightly. "I'll never leave you, Eve. I promise!" "Jay, Jay!" Eve uttered his name like an enchanting spell. He mind-held her close within his embrace, and sensed her deep, painful fear as raw as it had first struck, soothe and seep away with the fever. "The worst is over." Lee muttered, making him wince. "It will take at least two days to recover her wit, but the crisis is over. Instead I'm worrying about the two scamps." The values on the monitors were absurd, impossible. Letitia shrugged: "I don't know what to do!" JS nodded and tried to read deep into their minds. He had never done it out of respect and because Eve had told him that it was impossible. The two brats seemed to have an alien, impenetrable barrier. JS began to tap their minds carefully, calling them and sending fond memories in order to be recognized: their jokes, the pizza slices they craved after... A recollection struck him forcefully. A strange ship out of control, lost in space, was falling toward a giant red sun: A-Crotalus! He felt their terror, their fear of burning in the fiery furnace. Flotsam hugged Jetsam. They cringed in horror, teeth chattering. Their bodies connected, their minds fused ... and the controls worked just enough to divert the ship to New Mars. "Jay! Help us!" "Damn! They're symbiotic!" JS shout. "They must stay in the same pod! Presto!" Letitia and Lee obeyed right away. As soon as they touched each other, Flotsam and Jetsam joined. Slowly, very slowly the parameters stopped to wave crazily. "Here, have a beer," said Lee, sitting down next to JS. Lee pointed to the scamps. "How did you find out?" "I remembered when Jetsam was hurt!" JS lied, too tired to explain. "Er... can you tell me about the Pasteur?" Lee asked amicably, intrigued by the last events. "When the EA discovered the BAR-lab, they sent a group of scientists on board. Soon they lost contact. My team was returning from a 'kill-the-bug' action, when we were diverted to extract the survivors. A nasty business." JS sighed. "We ended injured and ill. EAS Pasteur rescued us. At the outbreak of the plague, panic and desire for a new bio-weapon generated the disaster." It was nearly dawn when Vickie woke JS up: "Jay, I'm sick!" --- Thanks ZOOMING DOESN'T BITE.
