Description

Mandy and Bill at Picnic Point beach last week. (Bill is the one in the jeans.) People often ask if Mandy goes in the water when we take her to the beach, and the answer is "No." She lived the first 11 years and 9 months of her life in Kansas, and her maiden voyage to the beach was in May, 2010. She's been several times since then, and just loves it. There's so much to do and see and smell, and we let her dawdle along as much as she likes since the whole point of going to the beach is to have no agenda while you're there. You can teach a Westie to do almost anything as long as you're doing it yourself, but she's not excited about getting her feet wet, and at 12 years old there doesn't seem to be any point in teaching her to swim. It's not that we try to keep her OUT of the water ... she just has no interest in going IN, and we're quite happy to have a dry dog in the car after spending an afternoon at the beach! West Highland Terriers were originally bred to be ratters, are not natural water dogs, and aren't much into fetching, either. If someone throws a stick into the water, Mandy sits down and looks around as if to say, "Well, THAT's gone. What are we going to do next?" She may look calm and laconic in this picture, but I assure you, it was just a momentary lull in the action. Mandy keeps busy at the beach the entire time we're there! It seems to be her new favorite activity. (I don't consider napping in a chair to be an activity, so the beach wins the prize!)

Awww...she's VERY cute! And 12? Well she's a mature lady, hmm? Yes, when one goes to the beach there should be no agenda or plans...just stroll along as you wish, looking for treasures washed up on the beach. Spring and Fall are my favorite times to go...hardly any people and nice to walk along. I LOVE the beach, but not one of the people that like to go out and lay in the sun there...I would much rather wade in the water and enjoy the waves and the seagulls. Of course, up here in New Hampshire the water is usually so cold that your feet turn red...and THAT'S in the summer!

Well I can tell you, that Magnus is not a water dog either. He hates to be wet.:) A fun shot, Tara and I know what a dog looks like :-D

I can't wait to meet her; she's a real beauty, and she does look quite intelligent. She must know that the water here is CCCCCCOOOLLLLDDDD! No way would I go in either!

Most impressive. The title is often used in connection with an artillery barrage and/or duel.

She has the look of intelligence that I always associate with predatory creatures, but as her particular ethnicity is know for rat-catching (cats aren't too crazy about that bit of competition!) it stands to reason that she'd be naturally alert and aware of everything going on around her. What's so cool about that is the fact that like cats, dogs have this ability to become absolutely adorable while doing what they do best, which is...well...whatever it is they're doing at the moment. You can also see the very real fact that there are thoughts going through that canine brain, and she's reacting to them...I love that. Intelligence is always so cool! I love this shot, and the fact that Bill has become a part of the landscape in service to Mandy rather than a human focus...Bill's legs in blue jeans make such good environmental features! Especially when getting a dog's eye view of things! Yeah, I like that! Marvelous stuff.

What a sweetheart. I'm referring to Mandy since I don't know Bill but I bet it would apply to him, too. I love your comments.

She looks so lovely, of all the dogs I have had I don't think any of them liked he water and the only way they would go in was if you though them in (which I didn't like to do anyway..) A dry dog was fine by me lol!!

I'm very glad you pointed out Mandy wasn't the one in the jeans. I don't think she'd look that good in them, though they do make them for all kinds of bodies these days. I'm with you about the beach, it's for just being there and seeing what you see.

Mandy is quite a cutie. She has that expression that asks "What are you up to now?" Glad you pointed out Bill. They say dogs and their companions tend to look like each other as the years go by.

You married a pair of legs and a dog??? Great shot, and I must concur about Mandy's intelligence. And Bill's writing and photography is much better than most legs'...
