Description

I had went cast netting going towards Hollybeach on Nov 14. it was raining and all but this was the first time I took off to do cast netting for shimp cent 1970. I forgot how to thow a net and all. here I was cold and rain was falling lightly and my net would not open up at first but then I got it to open up. I just saw a few people with rod and reel doing some fishing but no one was cast netting. I just got these type of fish which is not good to eat. Be good for bait and that it. It started to rain hard so I went to another place i used to cast net in 1970 and it was not raining there so i got out and was walking to where I could cast net. I did talk to some people that was leaveing and they say they was fishing with rod and reel for red fish. they caught seven which filled up they 48 quart ice chest. I then saw a sign that read all the do and don't. I saw one was cast netting . lol here I was cast netting and it was a don't. I jump back into my truck and went back to the place I was cast netting and saw a sign there too not to cast net. I took off going back home then and saw some one fishing with a rod and reel and stop to talk to him. He say the whole Sabine National Refuge was like that for now. He say at times they will close it for some reason which he did not know. This man was here to get the red fish too. which he caught some. Now I had goen down there to try to get shimp but just caught one shimp which I thown back as I did with these type of fishes which I know two people told me the names but I forgot the name lol ps no fish or shimp was hurt here or die

We have strict regulations on net casting here too. We usually don't use a throw net but we scoop our bait with a large butterfly net. We can't use harpoons either and I used to like to throw one up the river but they don't allow it without certain permits and in certain seasons. These do look like good bait for rod and reel. We usually scoop crawfish for bait here.

GREAT shot and story, jocko! Many states have similar 'net' laws. This is to protect a BIG BOAT/Company from coming into an 'area' where LOCALS depend on fishing and basically taking a HUGE CHUNK in one "NET" compared to dividing up the fishing amongst the MANY citizens.

Nice photo Jock, and glad you didn't get caught cast netting and get in trouble. The gov. has a habit of changing the rules and could care less about who they hurt.
