~ The Oregon Trail
When I was in the fifth grade our class studied the history of the Oregon Trail. It took from four to six months to travel the 2,000 miles from it’s beginning in Independence, Missouri to it’s terminus in the Willamette Valley south of Portland, Oregon. During the latter six decades of the 19th century tens of thousands of pioneers made the journey.
In Chapman Square is a bronze statue commissioned by the Oregon Trail Coordinating Council in 1993 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Oregon Trail. The Promised Land, by Oregon artist David Manuel, shows a father, mother, and son at the end of their journey. The sculpture features a rifle and a bible. God, guns and family were needed to survive and succeed in those days.

'God, guns and family were needed to survive and succeed in those days.' Wonderful shot. Unfortunately, it seems that these days guns and bibles are just as handy when warmongering. And if you don't have a Bible, a Koran will work just as well.
