Location: Berlin - Spandau; Citadel Welcome again in Spandau! Meanwhile we have entered the citadel and we are in the inner yard, which reaches 200 m to 200 m without the bastions at the corners of the fortress. The ancestors integrated the old castle into the "modern" fortress, and here we have a look into the old parts of the castle. There is the tower with its 3,60 meters mighty walls. A fine restaurant with medieval atmosphere and meals is situated here, and the "gothic room" with its fine accoustic inside, a paradise for choirsingers... And in the caverns and dungeons the sleeping bats, tenthousands of them... After 1871, when the Germans won the war against the French, the french had to pay a lot of money. The french money was bunkered here in the old tower, the "Julius Tower" - till 1918, when the french won WW I. In WW II the nazis established a chemical laboratory here and worked at chemical weapons. Parts of the areal were toxic contaminated and it took a very long time and a lot of money to decontaminate the fortress. Now it is a tourist`s attraction and a very fine place for concerts in the summertime. Jethro Tull played here, Neil Young, Patti smith, Tangerine Dream, Runrig and many, many more. The concert season ends with the last day of August with the "Bats Fiesta", then events come to an end and the bats from whole Berlin come to their winter quarter - Good night!
