Description

I seem to have quite a number of shots that can qualify as “Atmosphere/Mood” in keeping with Renderosity’s genre classification system. I find it funny that some of my “atmospheric” shots are literally…um…atmospheric. In keeping with that little tradition, here’s a shot of the atmosphere a few weeks ago, as seen from Corey’s (and his roommate’s) back porch. I’d gone out to do something, and managed to nab this shot of contrails and clouds. I suspect I’d been out on a cigarette break. At any rate, I had my camera with me, as a Romanian Pentacostal church stands across the alley from the apartment. I’m quite keen on the possibility of capturing one of the little old ladies that always seem to be there: they’re kitchen staff, and I usually see a car at least once a week there, unloading groceries, and little old ladies in strangely Russian Orthodox headscarves, unloading cabbages and fresh veggies and bags upon bags of edible stuff. I have yet to capture any of them or any of the stuff they’re known to unload, but I suspect I’ll find one soon…and in a scarf no less. Since living in Prague and indulging in a habit of laying flat on my back in a courtyard, I’ve come to appreciate interesting contrails: most are left by military planes, or planes on inter-continental trajectories. At times, I imagine such planes (and their contrails) to be phenomena of another sort: impending meteor impacts, or really neat, concise comets making their way through the interplanetary medium. At other times, I just see contrails and make whatever attempts I can to count the number of wing-mounted engines such planes may have. It seems that nearly all high-altitude flights involve planes with four wing-mounted engines…that stands to reason as it takes a lot of thrust in order to stay up that high for long periods of time. And so, in keeping with my “atmosphere and mood” mood, I’m posting this shot of sunset in Albany Park, seen from a few feet above Albany Park. As always thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a fantastic week.

Such gorgeous colors! The light is beautiful, and I love seeing the neighborhood in silhouette. When I see contrails like that, I always wonder how close they really came to each other. No way to tell, but still ... it's a puzzle!

Somewhere in my house in one of the many boxed of actual photographs I have, is the twin to your foto. It's not nearly as colorful, and I knew nothing about RR then, but it's the same thing--that big "X" in the sky!! Now I'll have to see if I can find it, scan it, then postwork the heck out of it to see what I can come up with. Great capture and super details!!

This makes me think of Zorro practicing before he had his famous Z down pat:) Like your musings...after our trip to Boeing's assembly lines, the newest long haul wide body jets with the longest range are going with two huge powerful engines...you know the kind that are so big around that a man can stand upright inside one.

Really nice shot Chip! I agree with Tara, I love the color and wonder how close the planes came to each other. I think the way the objects (buildings, roofs, etc.) are so dark in the foreground really impacts the color of the sunset. For some odd reason it reminds me of the old time shadow plays that folks would put on behind a sheet - don't know why it doesn't really have anything to do with the shot but the contrast between dark and the vividness of the color is really cool. Great job!

I have often wondered about the closeness of the two planes myself, though I know that even if they'd been on exactly the same trajectory they obviously weren't there at the same exact time...still, it gives you pause. Great capture of this rune in the sky. Makes me think of the Wizard of Oz--"Surrender Dorothy"!

Oh Chip - this is marvelous! I'm just quickly paging through the galleries before I work again and couldn't resist popping in! What an image - powerful mood indeed with those vapour trails! Looks like I will be in Chicago the weekend of 22/23 Jan. I would love to meet up with you and Corey. Please reserve the date!! :)

This is a great photograph, Chip. I love sunsets, and this one is quite spectacular. I also like the idea of you capturing contrails whilst on a cigarette break, and keeping an eye peeled for little old ladies in scarves!

Yes, X marks the spot! But what spot is that??? Ah .. well .. that's another day's topic. This is like the photos of the the Texas skies that Richardphotos posts! I didn't think that skies like that happened anywhere else! I am hoping that you can capture those little old Russian Orthodox ladies unloading their groceries .. and the cat who watches .. I'm seeing charming images of them in my mind already!
