Description

Within seconds of Hercules clearing the launch tower the technicians monitoring the boosters progress as it heads toward space know that something is going very badly wrong with the flight as their instruments start to register POGO - extreme, intense and violent vibrations along the entire length of the Super Boosters airframe. Already the aptly named POGO Meter on the technicians main console is registering that the airframe is under pressure to the extent of plus or minus 10 gees with the meter slowly climbing every second. They immediately make the Flight Director aware of what is happening to the huge super booster. Present in Mission Control is Robert Carter who has come to see this latest flight of the Hercules and its first time ML Test Article payload. Whilst Carters and all other eyes in Mission Control have only being paying scant attention to anything which is not in their particular sphere of observation, they are all now casting near continuous glances toward the technicians in the booster control section waiting to hear what will happen next. Plus or minus 15 gees and the meter still keeps steadily rising. In the booster control section in Mission Control the technicians are constantly monitoring the telemetry from the Hercules trying desperately to find the answer to what is going so badly wrong with the flight. 20 and still the meter keep steadily rising. From his vantage point next to the Flight Director in Mission Control at Kennedy Space Centre Robert Carter also has his eyes now firmly fixed on the booster control section. He knows that that should the POGO meter reach 51 the Flight Director will have no option but to terminate the flight by initiating self destruct of the booster and its payload. 30 and still the meter rises. Now well on its way toward low Earth orbit the Hercules Super Booster and its ML Test Article payload are out of range of the ground based telemetry tracking cameras allowing the technicians in the booster control section only their various tracking instruments to determine the cause of the problem and find a means to correct it before it is too late. Everything they try is to no avail as still the meter continues its steady rise. 35 and it looks as if the problem may be correcting. But the brief, instant, moment of relief felt as the POGO meter seemed to slow or even be on the verge of stopping its inexhaustible rise toward 51 is as quickly cast aside as the meter jumps to 40. In Mission Control both the Flight Director and Robert Carter know what must come next. Normally the responsibility would lay with the Flight Director to take the next necessary steps to end the flight but as he reaches into his pocket and extracts the red tagged key which will unlock the clear plastic panel which covers the boosters self destruct button Carter reaches across and takes the key from his Flight Directors hand and unlocks the panel himself allowing the panel to slide back. Like some red Cyclopsian eye the self destruct button seems to stare out at Robert Carter. He knows that one gentle push of this button will send out a signal which will instantly destroy not only the multi-million dollar Hercules Super Booster but also its multi-million dollar test article payload. 45 and Carters finger hovers over the fateful button. 50 and Carter pushes his finger forward as the meter reaches 51.
