It looks like you are trying to sculpt at too high of a subdivision level with too high of a Z-intensity. That's why you are getting that lumpy look. Try turning it down and using an alpha with soft edges. A common mistake of people that first start using the program is dividing as high as they can and then sculpting. Get as much as you can out of each level before dividing again. That is, unless you are going for the Star Trek look.
