Description

(This was so much sharper in the 5 MB version---sorry Corey! 512kb is a killer!) Please see full-size! * * *
This is for the one & only Corey Black's birthday! (Gallery here.) When Corey first came to Rosity, I thought "where'd this guy come from?" He was so natural, so fresh & right, I thought he'd sprouted up a week earlier with a camera in his hand (and about 2000 scripts). I didn't know he'd been an artist for years, had been a writer since the womb, had performed, worked in newspapers, done drawing, painting, photography, etc, and came from a family of artists. Yet, what struck me even after all that was that Corey still caught photos that felt like you were right in the moment---you were 'there'. (Am I right, Corey-fans?) He wasn't afraid of anything---tilting the camera, shooting through a car-window or a screen, communing with over-the-hill fruit, emotionally abused leaves, amazing store-windows, abandoned industrial cranes...and he 'got it', as if each shot were just waiting for him in the camera. He combines total spontaneity with a true eye, he makes the ultra-familiar feel like you were seeing it the first time, I love his composition & juxtapositions, and his lack of artistic pretension is positively infectious. (And his writings have been wildly funny and deeply moving by turns.) I had the most wonderful visits with him when I met him, and I just love his work! He just recovered from major surgery, to which everyone says "Bravo, Corey! Be well as the Sun!" I've been a recluse from you (and Chip too), I have no excuse except it's been a crazy year & I'm truly sorry, but I've loved your gifts from the day you set foot here, and wish you a terrific birthday and many more years of terrific health & creativity. While this crazy montage is just a token, I send all kind of joy & thanks for gracing us with your being, i's been a joy to walk in your world, and may you shine for at least another millennium, and may I be there to grab some of the wonderful rays!
* * * I lost my connection so haven't seen anything this weekend. (I'm uploading this from a friends's...) But it'll be fixed Sunday night & I'll return as soon as it's done. Thanks for your visits & wonderful support and a great Sunday to all! Mark (More dedis in the weeks to come.) (All photos mine & all Chicago.)

A typically beautiful Mark collage; that first picture really caught me, something about the light and colours...I want to touch it and hold it, it's emotionally tactile! Fantastic work and dedi, Mark!

All of these are outstanding; you do such marvelous BIG pieces and you have such a gift for proportion and a sense of visual poetry. I love each and every one of these images and I love the way in which they stitch themselves together and form a really fantastic montage of the city. I have to say that the yellowing Willow tree has really grabbed me as well! WOW! I love Willows, they're full of little red mites and they always look so deliciously shaggy, rather like poodles in terrible need of a trim, that and there's something just incredibly right about them. Odd that I've photographed so few of them! They are among my favorite trees and so seeing a Willow here is just totally perfect for me. The fact that this is a birthday dedication as well is the icing on an already delicious cake. And then, you go and do this Mark-style evolutionary thing--something I love. It's rather like a visual passacaglia (I'm obsessed with that musical style right now, as anyone who's heard what I have on "repeat" is always repeating! Funny how that works!) Anyway, WOW...this is truly a great dedication: incredibly touching and as always, brilliant. I love it. I'm at Corey's place now so I'm going to make sure that he sees this. Just think of me putting down my pasta-sauce jar recycled into a drinking vat dedicated to that oh-so-divine beverage, known by the sacred name of Dr. Pepper, and nudging Corey with a Bill-and-Ted-Syle: "Dude, look at this!" and you've got an idea of what's likely to be occurring within two-to-three minutes after this comment is posted, provided I stop typing now. Okay, I'm gonna stop typing now.

More of your amazing cityscapes, Mark, and yeah, you make them GIGANTIC and it's perfect. I love the fish eye look, brings the city in for closer inspection while distorting it at the same time. And isn't that how cities are--distorted?? It's also the perfect birthday gift for Corey, who just walks around with his camera shooting anything and everything!! I love his stuff and wish him BIG happy birthday!!

Six more frames of Chicago splendor. And well timed for Corey's birthday (Happy B-day once more Corey). I agree with all your comments about C's work Mark...but didn't know about the depth of his rich artistic background. Not at all surprising. You work magic with your layers upon layers. Your collage takes us on a beautiful abstract walk through part of the city you both call home... This is a celebration of light, form and color worthy of a member of the 2009 Ninja-pack:)

WOW WOW AND WOW !!! Another fantastic symphony if light, colors and moods. I think you know exactly what you are doing here. I believe you have a purpose with the order of these images. I see a similar order as the one for Sandra. And the grand finale with almost fireworks-ish ending with the cymbals and Bass drums. Where is the confetti? This is a burst of energy and beauty. And all is garnished with so beautiful and touching words. Stunning indeed. Love it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COREY !!!

Fabulous! I love the progression. It's like watching a magic trick happen. Super photos, and what you've done with them is incredible. The way things line up ... fit together ... meld and merge ... the result is just right. A beautiful dedi for Corey, as well. Happy Birthday, Corey!

What really spoke to me instantly was the thrid frame...Ok I know that it's part of the marvellous mounting story, but I just love the absolute peace of it.

There you go again Mark with another of your beautiful dedi's for one of your friends. This one is especially nice, and although I don't know Corey it seems safe to say he'll be grateful for this thoughtful dedi. So nice to hear he recovered from his surgery and with friends like you he will be on the fast track to recovering fully.

I love your city dances and meanderings they are delightful and I'm sure Corey will love them too. I love all the variances you have managed to create. I think my favourite is the golden weeping willow as it looks so happy but the horizon one comes a very close second. Excellent work and a delight to open.

Wow, you were evidently quite busy with your filters and manipulations in this stunning collage, Mark! A myriad of bright colors and clever vignetting permeate these wintertime concepts. Ergo, you have gone beyond the pale in this excellent birthday dedication to your fellow Chicagoan.

WOW,Mark, those are about the nicest things anybody has ever said about me! Thank you so much!! I just sort of melted as I read them. WOW! Always nice to know that people appreciate your work and understand what you're doing! I love this montage!! The colors, the post work, the depth and the almost psychedelic quality it takes on. This is great work and very entrancing. The feel of it took me back several years to an era of youthful expanding horizons and my brain started playing Traffic's "Dear, Mr. Fantasy". Must be the dream-like fantastical quality and the feeling that you can almost live inside of it. I love your work as well, and your comments are always so wonderfully detailed and insightful. Thanks for this dedication, all the well wishes and positive energy. Be well, healthy and happy, my friend.

Your dedication and montage left me speechless :) Nothing to comment except that what a beautiful and fitting dedication to one of my favorite people, my brother Corey. He has always had the gift of language, a photographic memory (not as stunning as it used to be but still photographic) and a stunning eye for capturing and saying things right in the moment. Your montage fits him perfectly- urban, active and real.

Wow. Mark! This is fabulous. I particularly like the second panel .. the tracery of the tree branches over .. under .. the buildings is simply awesome. I'm just grateful that I don't have to choose .. the colors, lines, textures of each panel simply blows me away.
