Had to smile at this... When I was 16, my mother found my secret stash of cigarettes in my nightstand. She was angry and confronted me. I smoked a brand that had coupons on the back of the pack and finally as she ran out of steam yelling, she looked over at my large stack of coupons in the drawer and asked, "And how valuable do you think those cigarette coupons will be to you when you are 60 years old and smoked yourself silly for over 40 years???" "Very," I smartly answered, "because I'm saving them up to trade them in for my very own iron lung so I can live another 40 years after that!" I ducked just in time to miss her right hand as it whizzed by my left cheek. LOL

They were fantastic at the time and prolonged, and even saved, many lives. The down side was lying cooped up inside, unable to move much or communicate, or go to the toilet as needed. Thankfully, we have trach-tubes and external respirators allowing a near normal life today. But it's good to have a historic reminder in order to better appreciate medical advances. Good photo of the apparatus. :-)
