Description

'Pice' talked me into buying a carved conch shell from him. Because I found his face interesting as it reflects the racial mix of the Belizean population I obliged. Belize is the most sparsely populated country in Central America with an estimated population of 315,000 as of 2009. Most Belizeans are of multi-racial descent. About 34% of the population is of mixed Maya and European descent (Mestizos), 25% are descendants of African slaves and British pirates (Creoles), 15% are Spanish, about 10% are Mayans, and about 6% Garifuna, also known as Black Caribs, descendants of South American Indians and African slaves. The rest is a mix of Europeans (mostly descendants of Spanish and British colonial settlers), East Indians and Chinese (restaurateurs and businessmen), Middle Easterners (mostly Lebanese traders), North Americans and Swiss-German Mennonites. The official language is English, but Creole, Spanish, Mayan, and Garifuna is also spoken. My driver spoke English, not the English spoken in Britain or the US, but it was English. When he asked for direction he spoke Creole (a versions of English that cannot be understood by other English speakers). When he referred to Indians he meant East Indians, when he referred to Spanish he referred to Hondurans and Guatemalans which come to Belize (legally and illegally) for cheap labor. Cool trade-off! I can definitely see why his uniqueness was intriguing… a special look indeed! I like his name too! At first I read it as "peace"…. super cool expression you caught of him as well! Seems like a genuinely friendly kinda guy!
