Description

My travel time into work normally takes me 10 minutes. Yesterday, due to the weather, it took 90! There were lorries stranded on slight inclines where the ice had formed making uphill progress a struggle. Cars abandoned, due to the inability of their drivers to cope with the conditions, and general chaos ruled. Such is the ability of the people of Great Britain to cope with extremes. Very few vehicles left our depot, but me being reckless, decided to venture out. Hills were my main enemy; to defeat them was an interesting experience. Other drives failed to realize that stopping on a hill for a lorry is not a great idea. They threw out the rule about vehicles coming up a hill having right of way, making me pull over to let them slide down the hill. I lost count of the number of third gear hill starts I had to do to get my vehicle moving again. Anyways, managed to get round to collect as many parcels as I could. An experience of snow and ice driving that I could quite easily forgo having to repeat ever again.

I know exactly where you're coming from! The wheather here in Norfolk hasn't been nearly as bad as in other areas of the country, (my poor daughter lives in Devon, a 16 hour drive on Saturday to come see her ol' Dad) but you're right, drop a little bit of white stuff and PANIIIIIIC! I have a four mile car journey to work and, just like you' I had one day last week where that journey took me 70mins, and all because people just don't sit and think for 2 miins!!!! The old people, god bless em!, go out and buy every loaf of bread they can lay their hands on....at 8.00am in the morning! and the young drivers think that snow and ice is a good time to take their brains out and leave them indoors. If you drive for Parcel Force mate you have my utmost respect...you're all doing a fine job in all this muck!!!!HAPPY CHRISTMAS

I can only imagine how slippery it becomes. Can you put chains on trucks like those on a car?

Bravo, Steve! Our postman hasn't been since Thursday and yet it is mostly a level walk from Wellington Road! I've walked nearly that far each day WITHOUT a trolley to hold me upright.

Great shot however your narrative sounds harrowing at best :) I wouldn't want to be facing a lorry coming downhill!
