Description

Capricorn the tenth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Capricornus and begins around the Winter Solstice (on Dec. 22 according to our calendar). The constellation is usually depicted as a goat with a fish's tail. One myth says that when the goat-god Pan was attacked by the monster Typhon, he dove into the Nile; the parts above the water remained a goat, but those under the water transformed into a fish. Capricorn is sometimes depicted as a sea-goat, and sometimes as a terrestrial goat. The reasons for this are unknown, but the image of a sea-goat goes back at least to Babylonian times. Furthermore the Sumerian god Enki's symbols included a goat and a fish, which later combined into a single beast, the goat Capricorn, recognized as the Zodiacal constellation Capricornus. Goats are considered to be rather hardy animals. Capricorn is most often compared to the mountain goat. Capricorns are thought to be loners at heart, with introverted characters. Mountain goats find security in cliffs and heights--the highest places that can be climbed. Slowly but surely, a goat climbs the mountain. And, Capricorns are thought to move through life, achieving success slowly but surely. A large measure of strength of character is also associated with Capricorn. Capricorn is all about hard work. That's no problem, since Capricorns are both ambitious and determined: they will get there. Life is one big project for these folks, and they adapt to this by adopting a businesslike approach to most everything they do. This is a collage from two different ancient Roman mosaic floors (actually one is a detail I repeated in the vertical stripe). The vertical one with the sea-goat and the lad is from the Musei Capitolini, the horizontal one with the sea-goat triton, son of Poseidon, king of the sea, and a kind of phoenix is from the Vatican Museums. Goat and tree are from Padova. Thanks for your kind comments. AND MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!

in pieces like this, you are really doing an art made of art, a collage of artworks made into a new piece of art. The collage works, and I wonder what ancient Romans would think of a christmas tree! (Actually, it's pretty pre-christian, right? They'd probably feel right at home. Maybe they had a progenitor, something you'd know much better than I.) I love your monthly dedis to that month's birthdays, and your backgrounds, of course, and what you glean from it all. I knew very little of the background on Capricorn, now I'm totally whetted. And I appreciate such a mythic upload for christmas, going back to pre-christian roots and back to some common place in all of us. It's also very playful, the way you do these combinations. I'm only doing one image per gallery today, so I can wish everyone a fine holiday; but you know: I wish I had a separate life to come here and comment on all the images I haven't commented on. I actually have notes in my head on a bunch of them, including on your series (and including, in that, your art series, which I only commented on about a quarter of, so far). This is just that kind of gallery for me. (I'm slow here because I spend a lot of time when I come here, I can't seem to pull away...) But in the meantime, let me wish you a wonderful holiday, and I hope the 'season of lights' is illumined for you and that your 2011 is filled with even greater light & discovery & with your effortless wisdom for the rest of us. It's been a real pleasure. And thank you for your support in my world as well, Sandra: I appreciate it all. Have a great holiday, and I'll be back for more after it's all over...

I love Roman mosaic floors! I get so excited when I'm watching a show on an archaeological dig and they find a mosaic floor. Beautiful composition! I love the mixture of ancient mosaics, Christmas tree, and goat. Wonderful combination of the two mosaics. Excellent dedication to the Capricorns in our midst and beautiful image! Merry Christmas!

My sister is a Capricorn. Born this very day. Not quite sure the character analysis is true except to say she was a stubbornness when it comes to her goals. And she does have a tendency to nibble at Christmas trees - no, that part is a joke.

This is fantastic Sandra! Of course there maybe a little bias in that opinion, being a Capricorn myself...lol.
