Description

This Magnificent Frigatebird is looking for scraps from the fish the man on the left is cleaning. There were a whole lot of gulls hanging around and fighting over the scraps, but once the Frigatebirds showed up and began to harass the gulls and stealing their catch and catching the given up morsels in mid-air or sometimes near the surface of the water, the gulls didn't have a chance. I was fascinated with these birds. It is one thing to see them soar at altitude without ever flopping their wings, but an entirely different story when these aerial acrobats steal other birds fish at low level, making sharp left or right turns using their forked tails, and seeing them up close with their 8 foot wingspan. It was intimidating. It was frustrating though using my little Canon camera - I had the bird(s) in the viewfinder, pushed the shutter, and the camera took the picture - about half a second later. By then the bird(s) was half out of the picture. This picture was taken at Caye Caulker on 4 December 2010. Thank you for viewing and commenting, Sig...

What an amazing capture! I can't even imagine a bird that size hanging around the shore. Our biggest shore birds are the gulls, and the only birds around these parts with that sort of wing span are large raptors ... bald eagles, and smaller hawks. Fantastic photograph, my friend!
