Description
Got a few pictures of some folks riding their snowmobiles today. I totally blew a chance to get an awesome shot of one going the other way and throwing up quite a tail of snow while rounding a bend, simply because I wasn't ready and had the camera with a slower setting for doing scenery shots. By the time I looked over to watch, he was already past and going the other way.
Consider it a different form of winter wildlife photography, as it's the human kind. And these snowmobilers are wily.
Anyhow they're on a designated trail, so they're well within their right to go tearing through the woods and having fun.
This was in Wadsworth IL, at Stirling Lake which is just off Rte 173. Yeah, I'm crazy hiking out in the cold - but what the hey. It's fun, and sometimes you still get interesting shots even if they aren't the "good" ones.

The only way to "drive" on those trails

Unless you're the park rangers. They're the only ones allowed motor vehicles outside of snowmobile season. But occasionally I've seen the illegal ATV or motorbike, but the funny thing is the horses (which are legal) often cause more damage. (Particularly when they go out riding while the trails are too soft. It leaves a huge mess of ruts.) Still there are sections of trail with just enough slope where you can get past 25MPH going down it on a mountain or hybrid bike. That can be a bit of a thrill. Regardless that's about half as fast as what these guys were doing.
