Description

There are times when a particular truck yard on the south side of Chicago looks as if The Apocalypse has already happened. There are other times when that same truck yard is exquisitely boring. Of course, those times often coincide. The aforementioned truck yard is at its most gloriously interesting when it’s at its most gloriously boring. The east end of the truck yard was once empty and used as a dumping ground for…well…mounds of gravel or bits and pieces of wooden furniture left for woodlice and dogs. The east end of the truck yard is where a bewildering array of subtle apocalyptic images may grace the camera of a bored photographer. Now it's crowded with dead stuff soon to be towed away. None of it is camera friendly--there's too much of it and there are no lines of sight, not even on the macro level...plus it's all covered in snow: some of which has been dyed yellow by Rover's exuberant desire to decorate the place. Blondie, the second truck yard dog has been removed by animal control, and so Rover has hired a new security assistant--and so I suspect that some of the amber-colored snow-dye belongs the the as yet-to-be-named canine security officer. Anyway, on a warm day a long time ago, I saw dead machines. On that day, Ükür was born, and for those who have followed the Ükür-thread in my gallery, you know what goes on there. Oh, and I should say that there will be more stories in the Ükür universe, as well as more visits to Nemaea, Agara, The Iodine Archipelago, and other places as-yet named. I don’t know if many of them will have to do with dead stuff in a truck yard, but one never knows. This image has nothing to do with Ükür, but I like it. I like the machine quality of it, especially since there are wild grapes (or some form of ivy?) reclaiming it. I suspect grapes, since some breeds of Ivy are evergreen—which looks pretty weird when it snows. The leaves photographed here are now gone. They’ve browned, withered, and blown away. Actually, the dead truck and engine bits you see here are gone as well…but their drippings remain, and I’m pleased to say that truck yard woodlice are smart enough to avoid that area. I found this image during a desperate search for something that doesn’t reference snow. I’ve taken a lot of pictures recently, and I plan to post them in time. Now that Christmas is over, however, I’m tired of snow. It can go away any day now. Or maybe we should just ship it to the polar ice caps to combat the effects of greenhouse gasses pumped skyward by scores and scores of farting automotive contrivances. At any rate, I found this image in my search for something green, something at least partially-alive, though I have to admit that the dead stuff in this photo is why I took it in the first place. I like a good, dead machine, and I’m glad I got one good shot of this glorious, plant-encrusted corpse before it was unceremoniously hauled away. It was a warm day when I took this picture, and given my end-of-year habit of moving dental equipment in cold weather, I’m glad to see that there is such a thing as greenery and warmth. As always, thank you for looking, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all on the verge of a glorious new year.

There is something oddly Christmas like about this photo in spite of its season of origin. Chlorophyll green set against the red of rust I guess. But because these shades are more organic that the synthetic green and red modern holiday decore, I feel that this mixing is more natural and in keeping with the traditions of this time of year. There is also the notion of nature still winning out over man's design.

This is really interesting! I love the color contrast between the bright verdant green of the leaves and the deep rusty brown of the dead truck parts. As usual, I'm trying to figure out what they are. At first I thought it was an engine with its shirt off, then I thought it was suspension parts, and now I'm not sure what it is. Whatever the case, I like this picture a lot!

You have definitly got away from gray and white to green and rust...sounds like the truck yard is actually a rather active place even if most of the time it appears static to the periodic observer. I've burned out all my spare brain cells trying to decide what the old corpse is/was. It looks like some heavy duty suspension parts to me...but who knows...maybe it is simply some relic of another time and place. Always enjoy your story telling...

I would have been a little concerned if they were LIVE truck parts. That's too scary to even think about.... This photo, on the other hand is a delightful study in contrasts. Contrasting colors, contrasting textures, and contrast between the decay of human creation, and nature's ultimate reclaiming of what was once hers. Excellent!

I like the composition ... the way the vine follows the line of the dead metal bit on the left there. The light is gloriously non-wintery (which I like very much, although I do admit to having a soft spot for flat northern winter light as well) and it makes me long for spring. Right now I'm longing for the middle of January, no matter the weather. I'm sick of working in the upstairs apartment! Too much painting and cleaning and scheduling and organizing for my taste. I'd rather be sleeping in, going out to breakfast, and taking Mandy to see Patricia, and hanging out with Bill. Going to the library. The beach. Whatever. Your leaf-and-dead-truck-part image is a nice interlude. Thanks! :)

Why does this immediately scream Wall-E to me! I think perhaps it is the bolt along the top with a nut at its' end - or 'eye' to my vision. Then there's the long middle bit, albeit a darned sight thinner than the actual Wall-E had the use of. Regardless, this is smashing and I care not when it was actually taken - it's green! And soon, all will be again. Organic, inorganic - beautifully fused in dance! Fabulous! ^=^

The vibrant colors are wonderful, and it was clever of the leaf miner to mimic the rust on the truck parts! And I am charmed by the invisible junkyard dogs;)

I like how once something degrades enough, it becomes unrecognizable and therefore can really be anything that our imaginations can conjure. The colors alone are worthy of a sonnet, they are so rich and vibrant. Wonderful photo, wonderful words!

A great contrast of the leaves and the old rusty parts. There's an old junkyard where I walk at home, and I see all kinds of things like this. I can't get nearly as close, though, there's a nasty fence topped with razor wire. I don't quite understand why anyone would have to keep anyone out, I mean, it's nothing but rusty, broken trucks, etc. Oh well, makes for good stuff anyway. And your foto is really good stuff too--you get tons of great stuff from the truck yard!!
