Description

The Barn Swallow is one of the few birds that has adapted well to urbanization. Artificial structures have allowed it to move into new areas and nest in higher densities than ever before. As a result, populations are much greater than they were before European settlement of North America. It is estimated there are 190,000,000 barn swallows in North and South America. Barn Swallow are migratory; in the summer, they breed from southern Alaska through Canada, throughout the United States, except for the peninsula of Florida, where it is a local breeder, and parts of desert Southwest. Southward into central Mexico. Also throughout Eurasia and northern Africa. Small breeding colony in Argentina. They winter from Southern Mexico through Central America and throughout lowland South America. Swallows eat mosquitoes and other flying insects. Unattached male swallows can be homewreckers... An unmated male Barn Swallow may kill the nestlings of a nesting pair. His actions often succeed in breaking up the pair and afford him the opportunity to mate with the female. lovely! delightful little fellas...glad to hear at least one bird species is doing well...one would think with such a large population that the males wouldn't have so much trouble finding a mate without resorting to this destructive behavior...

Great image- I love these guys. We have a family that nests in our barn every year (there are actually about 5 nests they've built over the years) and we love watching them grow and testing their wings out. We always nickname them after characters from "Top Gun":) This year's "class" was Maverick, Goose, Cougar, Iceman, and always hiding in the back, Hollywood.:) ... "Mav!... barn cat at 12 o'clock! Evade! Evade!" :-)
