HDRI and radiosity - must have been slow. I'd love to know the specs of these images - machine, polygon counts, render times etc.

LewisDesign

4:10PM | Mon, 22 July 2002

hehe YES geogan it's very slow to render all that :). Animation was took me about 20 days to render (almoust 23 hours by day of rendering). Images are rendered in BIG resolutions like 16001200, 1280960 and smalest is 1024*768, AA level is Medium Enhanced AA with adaptive sampling turned off. So i spend another 3 days for render 9 images what i have in that AA level :). My machine is slow (Celeron 1GHz clocked to 1.3GHz wich give me 20-25% speed boost). Polycount is 35k in subDs (interior included).

You need to make a tutorial so us newbs can use this technique

LewisDesign

Yes dreiak tutorial is already finished loong time ago :). Totorial is finished on end of year 2001 and here is online Interactive CAR tutorial on LWG Forums. http://www.lwg3d.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4936 BTW be prepared :) - that's very, very detailed and time consuming tutorial (792 screenshoots of how to make Ford Mustang Cobra SVT)

I'm just kidding i think you image is the most photo-realistic rendering of a car i have seen at ever... but how could lightwave 7 render at higher qualities then Maya or Cinema 4D??? How much does lightwave cost? I know Maya and C4D are between $1000-$2000..... And lastly you much have a shit for a video card because 20 days does not sound very likely....I recommend a "Geforce4 Ti4600" $200 at pricewatch.com.....it'll render extremly fast! It has a fill rate of 4.8 billion AA samples/sec!!!!!!

LewisDesign

Thanks DarkEnh.... :) 1. LW 7.5 costs 1250$ (special offer on www.sharbor.com and they also give you 10DVDs with video training :). 2. Why shouldnt LW have high quality renders ?? LW have built in great render engine and allow users Radiosity, GI, HRI, Raytrace ... and all goodies out of Box. But evne if you have all that you still need to know how to use it :). Artist is main weapon and not Software (as long it's some of major players like XSI, LW, Maya, C4d or MAX) 3. Video card don't have anything with RENDERING frames :). Video card just help me when i model car (i didn't say that modleing was took me 20 days). Modeling was in about 35 hours total but one frame was rendered from 10 (fastest) minutes to 65 (slowest) minutes. I rendred about 2100 frames. So only thing what would speed up rendering time is FASTER CPU or dual machine or render farm. I could render all that frames in 2 days if i wasn't used Radiosity but i wanted ultra realistic renders and i waited :).
