Description

This is another hand painted caricature I did as an assignment for these past two weeks class at Schoolism "The Art of Caricature" Took me almost two weeks (full time) to complete! Not only was it difficult to caputure the likeness at the same time as caricaturing, but also because that is my first caricature painting in color (where we only could use 3 colors in a "split complementary palette" and mix those with black and white). Reference image in the corner was supplied by my teacher. Hope you like it Take care Lars Bjorstrup PS. Experimenting with my signature / copyright notice that I want to add to my images going forward - maybe I better write my name in print?

Thank you all, yes it is supposed to be a caricature of Forrest Whitaker, how I see him. Yes I hear he recently(?) lost a lot of weight - to me he is still this big man (that we saw eg. when he played Ida Amin in the "The Last King of Scotland". Actually he is not that easy to draw/paint I think .. he looks different in every photo I see :-) I just recieved critique from my teacher this morning. Yes he did like what I did here, but it is not perfect. He noted a number of flaws in my caricature painting here, and actually did some paint over my painting to show me how I could make it a stronger piece. I will correct it in my painting when I get time: 1. Left shoulder has an odd shape. 2. Shape of right ear is wrong 3. Right side of head could go a bit longer down 4. The color temperature should be warmer in the right side top of head 5. A bit more shadow on right side in general 6. Be more precise with edges and creases of his jacket etc. 7. More shadow in the part of the inside of the jacket we can see 8. A bit warmer colors on the left side of the face 10. some edges could be made soft/blurred (like the side of the jacket) and more .. Take care, Lars

Wow, very funny and a great image. From the comment above.. your teacher must be.. rather strict or exacting? Anyway, I love it.. far better than I could ever hope to do. Barvo and best wishes from Dave :^)

Hi Dave, Thank you very much! Well the teacher (Jason Seiler) is one of the best charicature artists in the world and has very high standards. No matter how well you think you did, he manages to find a number of flaws in no time - and show how it should/could have been done to make it a "stronger piece" as he says. And amazingly he is always right. He did also say that my painting was excellent and that what he said was just ajustments - which made me very happy. I work hard currently to become better at illustration, and I belive it is just a matter of passion, dedication, hard work and guidiance - then everyone can get to a higher level than what we are now. Take care. Lars

Love how you adopted his 'generous smile' under the changed (caricature-)conditions. Awesome!

Thank you so much Knechtrauprecht for this comment, I appreciate you mentioning his smile since I did work some time to get this .. well his entire mouth and lips right. Image still needs a few corrections that I will do some time later. Take care

What is important to me in caricature is that I recognise the subject quickly and the artistic choices give something to that character that I feel is consistant with trhe general public's perception of them. I feel this piece has achieved both those aspects

Thank you very much Turin_Returns, I agree - and I am glad you think that I have achived this here.
