Description

They are a quiet, unobtrusive presence. They look like humans. Indeed, when we think of alien visitation, we tend to think of anemic, pale creatures with enormous heads and atrophied, nearly-useless limbs. This is not the case. They look like us. We look like them. There are ways to tell differences, however. When we see people obsessed with their gadgets, not paying attention to the world around them, it is very likely we are seeing one of Them. Their devices are translators and scanners more sophisticated than any Star Trek style tricorder. They are listening to translations of our conversations and peeking inside our shopping bags…they are coordinating activities with their mother ships in orbit. They are gossiping—silently—with one another, laughing and pointing their fingers at the odd, naked apes chattering around them and constantly losing their car keys. They are gregarious creatures, social to an extreme: among their own kind. They are intelligent beings: they’d have to be to travel from There to Here, and their presence among us is a disturbance—not because of issues of invasion or subjugation in some way or another. Their threat is far more real than that. They are a threat to us, because we are a threat to ourselves. They are amoral beings, by human standards, and they are curious about us. It isn’t beyond them to impersonate divine beings, to start wars or other social upheavals…just to see. See what? You ask. The only answer I can come up with is: To see how long it takes. How long what takes? You might ask. I don’t know. It. Whatever it is. All I know is that some of us are as curious about them as they are of us. And some of them are cute, and no matter how much alcohol they drink, they never get drunk. Avocados, however, make them tipsy. ** Things like this occur to me when I watch people on public transportation—interacting. The funny thing is, they’re not interacting in a meat medium. Their interactions are digital, electronic, ethereal. Some of these digitally-enhanced people seem utterly divorced from their surroundings. Others seem immersed in the environment. Through their headphones I may hear music I don’t care about, and through their cell-phone conversations, I may hear all sorts of information. The odd thing about it is that none of the information seems inordinately “personal” and the music, no matter how loudly it plays in their headphones, never seems to interfere with their ability to hear Public Transport announcements, emergency vehicle sirens, and other necessary “sounds” that assault the urban dweller. Perhaps they are aliens, I think—perhaps they’re navigating their way through our world by pretending to be members of our species with absolutely no environmental awareness at all. It’s all a sham. I notice that some of them—no matter what—always seem to know just a little bit more than everyone else. They react to announcements before such announcements are finished. They don’t step off of curbs until dozens of other people have nearly been run over by runaway ambulances, taxis, or baby strollers; and on occasion, when one of them sees me seeing him (or her) a strange look of acknowledgement flashes across their faces, as if they’re saying: Oh, no…I’m not an observer at all…I’m just sitting here in my North Face jacket. *wink-wink* (Only, I’ve noticed, they don’t wear North Face…or any other fashion line easily named.) Hmmm…I’m curious about them now…so maybe I should go out with a bag full of avocados, find a cute one, and see what happens. Or maybe not...but I'll just say I did. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a fantastic week.

I'm fascinated by the way you watch people, and especially the way you describe them as either "in a meat medium" or not. I am always reminded of the book "Neuromancer" when you say things like that. It's funny how our interactions have been changed, yet the humanity that drives it isn't lost, as your photo here shows. I like the POV, too: it adds to the alienation-mood you're driving at here.

Wow. You just floor me when I read your narrative on a simple shot like this. There is SO MUCH going on in your brain, it leaves me breathless with awe. Yeah, it's a great shot, and the angle really works, but it's your ideas about it that make it into something special. Kudos, Chip!

I used to think I had a fairly unique take on things, but you really do take the cake. Seriously, meat medium, that had me almost on the ground. Somehow it all makes sense when you describe your thoughts and yet I'm left feeling a bit off balance, much like the angled POV in your photo is.

It's so true! My question is 'If something happens and you 'don't' write about it on facebook, did it really happen at all'? lol My pet hate is seeing 2 people sitting together but both talking to someone else online. It's like holding up a sign and saying that even the most insignificant piece of crap that I find on this iphone is still going to be more interesting than you'!!!!!!!!!!!

My one talking on her cell phone and the other one listening on a earphone gadget. I like what you right when describing them as aliens. It is if nothing around them exists.Outstanding capture my friend.

Hundreds of them pass my gate everyday on the way to Uni, where presumably they pretend to learn something academic. There must be an ginormous supply of Avocados near hear, there is always sick on the pavement on Tuesday mornings. Like Andrew I think it SO unacceptable to hold a digital conversation with a third party while in the company of a real person. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, I will never understand the all-about-me 'New Rude'.

I see a few of them every day. They are usually having secret conversations - telepathically obviously - via tiny ear plugs attached to a small square object tucked into a pocket. I really must now get an avocado in order to test whether our Aliens are affected in the same way as your. ^=^ Fascinating narrative. Fabulous world you and your aliens inhabit. ^=^

Ha, I've entertained some of the same thoughts about these aliens. My least favorite alien is the guy whose voice I hear booming ever louder in conversation behind me while I am stooped over getting something off a bottom shelf in a grocery store...I whirl around to face my accuser and he walks by as if I didn't even exist. I think he's obviously mad. But wait...there it is...that hard to see little gizmo in his ear. He's talking with somebody miles away about something completely unrelated to grocery shopping. Didn't recognize it before reading your piece above...now I know his secret. He's communicating with one of the motherships on the dark side of our moon. I'm lucky he didn't take me with him!!! Great photo...taken ninja style I suppose.

A new slant on an old subject. I like the tilt and as Bill commented, it must have been a ninja shot. I did not know about the Avocado thing either. Do you think that it is a different veggie for different solar systems? Do you think that we should get David Duchovny involved? :>) Dana

Looks like the woman in the transit car is thinking the same thing you are...and making the call to UFON. Love reading your mind-work ...I am usually short on words, simply because I lack the skills to adequatly express myself that way.
