Description

Hi friends, when I started this little series, somebody wrote that pics like this are an inspiration to visit the local railroad museum. I answer: Okay, thats fine, some well conserved and prepared steam locomotives, they look great, but: They are dead! Where is the smell of hot oil? Where is the smell of coal, of coal-soaked steam? Where is the breathing, when such a monster stands directly at your side and pants like an animal, ready to attack? And were is the whistleblowing, while children protect their ears? And where are all the handkerchiefs, the good wishes, the hidden tears? Events like this here show the afterglow of these great times, to see in the hundreds of people of both sexes, in the dozens of cameras and the eyes of our children, wide open in interest and fear.... Hope you enjoy the pic. Thanks for your comments for my last pics and for the favorite. Please feel free to send new comments, they are always welcome. Have a nice weekend, whereever you may living. Cheers! billcody

Nice tribute to the 'steam era'. I have only seen them in service in Germany long ago (1974/1975) and that was ofcourse in the aftermath. Nowadays I sometimes make a ride with one of these Dampfzuege owned by steam enthousiasts. In the Netherlands a lot of former German steamlocomotives can be found because Germany employed them until the late seventies (west) and even the eighties(east) and they could be bought when the were set aside at that time quite easily. Dutch steamlocomotives are very rare.

Wonderfully written! It has been some years since I stood next to a breathing, panting steam engine but you are so right...the atmosphere, the smells, the sounds, the vibrations, the sights...so alive and this can't be seen in a museum. Love the motion blur here.
