Description

The Hawfinch, Coccothraustes coccothraustes, is a passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae. As its closest living relatives are the Evening Grosbeak (C. vespertinus) from North America and the Hooded Grosbeak (C. abeillei) from Central America especially Mexico, the Hawfinch is sometimes also referred to as the European grosbeak. This is the largest of the finches I believe and a type that I have never seen. Super shot.

Very nice capture!! LOVE grosebeaks. I have not seen Evening Grosebeaks for many, many years. They used to be rather common here in New Hampshire...but it has got to be close to 30 years since I have seen one here. I miss their beautiful yellow. Hopefully some day I shall see one again!

I think the closest we have to a similar colouration here is the Bullfinch. This is a really fabulous capture. ^=^
