Description

We interrupt our regularly-scheduled onion, for… …an… …egg. As I sit at Corey’s place, listening to the soundtrack to the Narnia-series film, Prince Caspian, I find myself intrigued by…well…white stuff: paper…eggs…the less garish porcelain kitsch owned by Corey’s roommate. Most of it is dangerously garish, however…eye-searing and dusty, and though it might be interesting to photograph dusty, ugly stuff, I’ve decided to stick with round things: or oblate things as the case may be. I find some kitsch to possess a particular existential wrongness and well…thankfully Corey is like me. He’s allergic to kitsch, and has thus banned it from his immediate vicinity. Kitsch is not allowed in a (minimum) 8-foot radius from his room…Scarlett O’Hara has been ripped from her perch on the bathroom wall, and—as far as I can tell—banished from the apartment, altogether. This is a good thing. The eggs I’ve been photographing belong to Corey: they aren’t very dusty, and they don’t reflect questionable taste in “cute kid” kitsch, mixed disturbingly with…well…never mind. Let’s just say that it’s safe in Corey’s room. Nothing in Corey’s room stares at you…Corey doesn’t even stare. And so, with an egg, a sheet of folded paper, my array of LED-enhanced lighters, and free space on my camera, I’ve found reason to interrupt my Onion series. This egg belongs to Corey, which explains the absence of kitsch, or Vivian Leigh’s trademark simmering stare. I like her. It’s Scarlett O’Hara I can’t stand. But anyway, I digress. This non-Hollywood, non-Norman Rockwell by way of Tom of Finland egg drew my attention, and so I’ve given it the Blue Light Treatment (I found my blue LED lighter in the bottom of my laptop bag) and I’ve decided to post it here. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you're having a great weekend.

like a giant egg in a way it reminds me of the Alien movies. it has something unnaturally scary about it.. A creature might emerge from it.. so evil that even when we die, it can reconnect the brain in a bowl of special fluids for everlasting torture ...

Wasn't it Mork who came to earth in a gian flying egg? I like how you've captured the texture of the egg's shell with your lighting. It's always fun to experiment with stuff like this. Wish I had time to do more..

I can understand not liking Kitsch, but sometimes I can't help but find it amusing. So I guess I wouldn't qualify as allergic. At any rate, it's fascinating how an ordinary thing can be transformed by a simple change in the perspective and lighting. You've turned this egg's surface into something like one of the pictures NASA's probes return from their explorations of wandering comets or lonely asteroids in the seldom-glimpsed corners of our solar-system. But that's probably the result of the way my mind works, I admit. Isn't it amazing how we bring our own experiences into how we perceive everything around us? Lovely photo!

Eggs have a beautiful shape. They feel nice in the hand. I love this image! I like the dark outlines of the shadowed egg against the background light. The textures and shades of blue on the egg. Wonderful simplicity and drama of light and shape.

I just dropped in to see what condition my egg was in... Sorry, I was just watching The Big Lebowski. So, does this mean it's a Blue Egg Special? You seem to be very inspired by my refrigerator lately. Onions, eggs, there's a very nice bit of ham in there and god knows what you could do with the frozen shrimp. Let me know if you want me to buy you any other food items to photograph as these are turning out very nicely. Now I'm going to go root around in the pantry. Care to bring your camera.

Only you can take an egg, put it on the ground and make it compelling--great shot and postwork!

A masterpiece! I cannot recall just how MANY times this sort of set-up was put before us a students, with inanimate objects animal, vegetable or mineral. The challenge was often this:make a drawing without using LINE. You photo answers this perfectly!

I have to admit thinking as did efron when I saw this. I don't think I've ever looked at an egg properly since the Alien films...not that I actually go around looking at eggs, mark you, being a strange vegan. I did, however, spend summers between studying and uni testing eggs to earn a crust! I found it decidedly unpleasant. However, I find this image - once of the 'alien' thing, decidely fabulous! ^=^

I always pay attention to that first thought that pops into my head when I see an image or read a story, so with thoughts of Easter and Carol Burnett wearing curtains (spoofing Scarlett), I read the rest of your description. I love the egg, you've captured that wonderful texture with your lighter lighting and the blue is lovely. As for kitsch, while I don't want it in my house, it needs to be in the world. My parents had a running joke with kitsch, which included a plaster statue of praying hands (which is fine), painted gold (not fine) and ended up plastered with fake jewels, glitter, etc. The purpose was to "gift" it, unnoticed, to one of their other friends and make their escape without getting caught red-handed. Each temporary owner had to add to the decoration and then they in turn had to "gift" it to one of their friends. The object of the game was to not end up with the now frightful looking pair of hands. Now that is a great use of kitsch and it was a lot of fun.

LOVE the egg, the narrative and Corey's comment plus all the others. Sometimes I feel like I'm at a tennis match - the conversation could go on between the two of you without even having a subject- love the connection you two have- very cool shot and narrative :)

Do you sometimes see an image, sort of all of a sudden, and it hits you in such a way that you just swear in admiration? Yeah. Well, I just did that. This is SO f'in good! Wow. I have a friend from Holland who tries to teach me certain sounds in Dutch (they're almost impossible to make) and saying "egg and onion sandwich" is one of her favorites. (Not such a leap, right?) I butcher her language, and she laughs hysterically. (I know the feeling, listening to my NY-born husband talk. Sometimes if I've got nothing else to do I get him talking just so I can tease him about the way he says certain words!) Outstanding photogray!
